Forgot to add - I can't make it as I am playng that night at Hoopers, with the wonderful Siobhan Parr and the Prisonaires, featuring Bobby Valentino (ex-Bob Dylan band, Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler etc) Tony Reeves (ex-Sandy Denny, Jihn Martyn, Colosseum, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Curved Air, Greenslade) Les Morgan (ex-Jo-Anne Kelly Band, current Shed Load of Love)- forgot to mention Siobhan sang with the Alambama 3 and did bv's on the last Squeeze album, she'll be singing with the and, and I worked with Bert Jansch amongst others - and once again it's FREE to get in

Hoopers Bar, ivanhoe Road S5

I guess the nearest dedicated music venue would be the Brixton Academy...maybe that is the distinction the OP is making as opposed to live music nights in pubs and working mans clubs...of which thare are oodles of all kinds of musical taste in ED (and all well attended).

But where would you find a venue like the Brixton Academy in ED?.....and it would take a wider audience than that of ED to fill it I think. I like 'big' venue gigs.....so the Academy is near enough for me to find those kinds of nights.

@DJKQ

You're right about Brixton Academy, but it's successful because of its size - 4,500 capacity - so lots of north Londoners are 'forced' to come south of the river. The only other 'big' venues in London are either quite a bit smaller (Shepherds Bush Empire 2,000, The Forum 2,400) or much larger (Wembley Arena 12,500 and the O2 several million...), so it fits a niche.

That said, I'm beginning to dislike large venues and I'm seriously thinking of only going to small venues, pubs and clubs as I feel that's where the heart of the music lies. Unless it's Neil Young playing, in which case I'll go anywhere to see him :-)

Of course it doesn't need a music venue - it's a no brainer - the crochet thread got more readings and more posts than the thread for a gig and you put quality on the doorstep - anyone for a live needlepoint / crafting / sticker collecting / lonely hearts music club out there ?

I'll still have to drag them in

Well at least they don't go to gigs in order to gab and chatter like many audiences these days. I'm not one for silence (especially at a 'rock' gig), but I've lost count of the number of times in recent years I've politely asked people to shut up. Sometimes I just show them this picture from the Luminaire, which I have on my phone...

Not sure the reason for this infernal yapping - probably the modern-day overabundance of cocaine... ;-)

I love that poster!

We have posters up at DHFC asking people to respect the artists and not talk while there's live music, and yes - still people do (and occasionally get arsey if asked not to, though I've never actually had to chuck anybody out yet - though I will if I have to :)) )

That's because mostly people will only come to see people they've already heard of.

Sad but true.

That's why we sell out for many of our DHFC gigs but some of our Mag gigs with absolutely top musicians don't even attract local Goose punters, because they're not "names".

Hello Sue,

I have been to the local arts and music interests in the local and surrounding areas, contacted the Student Unions in Kings College. Word of mouth too. But it seems everyone has something on the 12th. I haven't recieved many replies to my adverts for the night, so I will be interested to see the numbers on Friday evening.

    • Hello.  A parcel for someone at 64B Blenheim Grove has been dumped at my address.  If anyone from 64B is in this forum, please get in touch!
    • CPR Dave is anti-dogs. Each to their own  I think my dog has perhaps grown a bit less nervy about the fireworks in the last few weeks, interestingly. Our last dog had no problems with them until he reached old age, when he became petrified.  CPR Dave - it's not just sounds of the metropolis they hate, mine collapses in fear when he hears thunder too
    • There's quite a difference between going for a run around the footpaths and trying to sit quietly for an afternoon in a wide, grassy area and enjoying the peace & nature. The other two grassy areas in the park are used for sports, and both had barriered trackway running through them. The Parkrun had to be cancelled for at least three weeks, iirc. I'm concerned by your continued reference to "the rye" - the event is held in the park, not on the rye (common). There is a big difference, despite the organisers and council artificially amalgamating the whole area when trying to convince everyone that it's only a small area that is closed off. The railings & gates enclosing the park are a big clue...
    • So have you cancelled your contract with InPost / Yodel now? If so, that's probably caused hundreds of parcels to be stuck in limbo, as they've said to me before that they can't redirect them to a different store. I have a parcel that was refused by you twice, the last time on 5/12, and since then there's been no updates, despite me calling them 3 times. They just say it's being investigated, but if they now can't physically deliver to you then that is obviously the issue. So much for shopping for Christmas presents early, looks like I'll never get them now.
