oilworker
"" Davros, no offence but Spitalfields is definitely a good place for your flatmate to work- there, Dalston, Hackney Wick, Bethnal Green, Shoreditch etc (please see Being a Dickhead's Cool on Youtube).""I've just watched this on yourtube and I go the message "you are using an out-of-date browswer" Does having a retro browser make me cool or what?? njc97
Oilworker - I think Lance has talked about riding fixed in training before. Interesting point about pedalling - I thought it was the opposite, riding fixed helped you go through the deadspot smoothly. But I've never had a good enough technique to care either way. oilworker
"Interesting point about pedalling - I thought it was the opposite, riding fixed helped you go through the deadspot smoothly" - thats exactly the point - the fixed wheel takes you smoothly through the dead point but when you go back to a geared bike you can't rely on that effect and you end up with a jerky pedalling technique.ps I'm almost certain I had one of those red retro flyers - a triang something or other! (what happened to triang??) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14245-any-fixed-gear-riders-in-ed/page/2/#findComment-381717 Share on other sites

oilworker
Thanks - I work in Italy and the no-socks and loafers look is still very big here (with white trousers rolled up at the bottom of course) - also stupid satin scarves and matching hanbags abound (and that's just the boys) - but all Italians are in some kind of a time warp - they still think it's clever to go around with a pastel shaded v-necked jumper draped over their shouders!! (They are in the Serie A league of dickheadism here!!) woofmarkthedog
Is a unicycle a " Fixie"I taught myself to ride one, to annoy my then wife..http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/images/products/medium/11536.jpg ( hang about, it worked & we're now divorced )It was the most pointless thing I could learn to do ride BUT massively enjoyableAnyway I LIKE a fixed wheel bike, it's a very pure, esoteric itemW**F Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14245-any-fixed-gear-riders-in-ed/page/2/#findComment-381725 Share on other sites
oilworker
Why didn't you simply leave your soiled underwear on the bedroom floor and toilet seat up like everyone else - would have saved a lot of time and needless aggravation??? Damo
Tried fixed for the first time at Herne Hill Velodrome, mildly terrifying and then tried it on the road for a couple of months. Found it wasn't for me and moved to singlespeed, red 853 Graham Weigh, sold now. Ride gears on my town bike but in a nod to the old skool, have downtube shifters. Geeky bit over and maintaining a bit of ED relevance, this is a great spot to ride any kind of bike. Easy into town, head due South in 45 mins you are in the countryside, Velodrome nearby and BC Bikes are a good bunch too. Need to have a look at Bon Velo in Herne Hill soon.As for the whole hipster fixie thing, more people on bikes is always a good thing and London has become much more bike friendly compared to even 5 years ago. No brakes and super skinny bars is pretty crazy though. I'm too old to fall off any more so am rather more cautious. Some Boris bike docking stations nearer this way would be good too, see they're heading East. Less hills I guess? Applespider
People struggle to get over the hump on Vauxhall Bridge on a Boris bike - I'd hate to see them attempt Denmark Hill.Never tried a fixie and not sure I'd trust myself not to make a numpty of myself. Heck, I occasionally forget when I'm on a spinning bike that can't just stop pedalling so not entirely convinced it would be a good idea somewhere that there are several tonnes of metal boxes flying around. cf123
Bought a fixed 2nd hand a few years ago for commuting and getting some winter training miles in. Its not the getting up hills its getting down them which is the problem, spinning out of control with one break in the wet is no fun. Sold it in the end becouse i was starting to feel like a fakenger like alot of newbie commuters tend to look like these days!. Been commuting for 16 years in london and can't believe the amount of cyclists without a helmet wearing retro caps to (they think) look cool Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14245-any-fixed-gear-riders-in-ed/page/2/#findComment-381840 Share on other sites
