Keep him in his job GOM, this will not become a Poundland.

Living in ED since 1993, I don't need M&S or Waitrose, and I am happy with our local independent shops, co-op and Iceland. If by any chance they come to our area I just hope won't take the place(location) of any of our 2 stores.

Like someone said Iceland make that balance in an area were all has changed since I first move in.

So you'd like to see the independent shops which make Lordship Lane such a pleasure to walk down replaced by a Waitrose to make it look just the same as many other high streets in London?

And you'd like to see all those independent shops put out of business, with all the personal misery that entails, so that a large company can open yet another supermarket?

If local people did not want what they are selling, the little shops would not still be here, regardless of what you may think of them :)

There isn't a waitrose on every high street: the point is that there isn't one much closer than beckenham in south-east london. The smaller or independent food shops don't suit all my needs or preferences - or those of many others on this forum. That isn't to say that a waitrose would provide everything I look for: it won't. Nor am I trying to say that shopping in east dulwich should be aimed only at me - only that it doesn't cater to everyone's needs. I don't enjoy shopping in iceland or the coop, sainsburys or tescos or the independent grocers and delis.

What does Waitrose sell that you can't get in any of those places???

Or is it the shopping experience itself that you find better in Waitrose than anywhere else?? And if so, why?

I'm genuinely interested :)

Where did anybody say that they were on "every" high street?

Obviously they are not :)

I think you said that a Waitrose would make LL look just the same as many other high streets in London. Which on rereading isn't exactly the same as saying that there is one on every high street (although it implies that they are not uncommon).

The point stands that it would still be an entirely unique sight for a SE London High Street.
