Sorry if I have disappointed you to the point of such weariness Huguenot- I was simply trying to get some certainty of numbers to end that potential sidetrack. Also, notwithstanding the far greater numbers of viewers/responders on this forum I was trying to add a note of caution to arriving at a conclusion from such responses. Whether it is 2000, 4000, or whatever number that consider the question here, it will only be from those who use this form of communication and that ignores certain sections of the local populous entirely. True representation of the demographic - which may be by a very small response rate - is far more important than quantity of answers.

Exactly. This forum should not be making decisions on behalf of the majority of the community that aren't quite as time-rich as the denizens of the edf.

Another NO I am afraid. The reason why most people came to live in East Dulwich and like to shop at Lordship lane so much is precisely because there are no big chain stores! Bringing and M&S or Waitrose would eventually bring other high street chains and we don't want that! .. leave this bit of London as it is .. it's becoming harder and harder to find streets like this one in London!

Knocking on doors across East Dulwich it seems about 10x as many people reading EDF as posting.

I've had many emails, texts and a few PM's that broadly correlates to the ration of people for or against. They clearly didn't feel they wanted to expose themselves to some of the direct responses that do sometimes appear on the forum.

This thread was meant to test opinion in finger in the air way. It was never meant to be definitive but an indicator. It has been really useful in achieving that small simple aim.

THANK YOU to everyone who's responded in whatever way felt best for them.

so what are you going to do with the info that you've collected?

Ok, Question Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?

Thread Started By Councilor James Barber.

12016 Views 435 Posts. Do we want one on LL? Mixed response.

It is not really a question of whether we want one or not.

It is a question of if Waitrose or M&S want to set up stall in East Dulwich.

If so, Have they already applied to Southwark Council to do so. ??

If there were interest from these two very influential Giants, there may be some scope for

people scratching each others backs.

Exactly. This forum should not be making decisions on behalf of the majority of the community that aren't quite as time-rich as the denizens of the edf.

Okay, first of all, this forum is not making any decisions about anyhting!!

Secondly, do you really think a big supermarket chain would give a toss anyway? If they want to open in an area, they will, if they dont, they won't.

If we were to have either, my vote would be Waitrose over the overpriced processed foods that M&S sell. Having said that, I'd rather have Waitrose instead of the Coop rather than in addition to. Lordship Lane is fabulous because of its independent shops - we need no additional supermarket, but I have shopped at Sainsbury's, Coop and Waitrose over the years and have always found the foods I buy from Waitrose are sold further from their use by date and tend to have been cared for better in transit so I'd rather my money go to them.

Well I don't have much to say regarding what would or wouldn't be a great asset to the area, but as a local I would say that there is nowhere to park here so I just can't see what more traffic would do for the area. It may come but sure as heck it will go. I don't even think about LL as a place to park anymore if I'm in a hurry, as the chances of getting a spot are slim to none. There is no more space here.

So,what you're saying is this thread is 15-pages of pointless navel-gazing? I agree.

The interesting thing to come out of it is that some people genuinely think this forum speaks for ED though.

Yes, on that, we agree.

You're misrepresenting. What "some people" (me included) are saying, is that the forum allows one to canvas opinion in a wider, and more cost effective manner than any of the alternatives. Of course there are lots of people in ED that don't use the forum, but to suggest that the only people using it are middle class 30 somethings with "time on their hands", is a nonsense.

more cost effective maybe but wider - i don't think so

i don't know about the demographics on here but i'd be amazed if middle class 30 somethings with time on their hands aren't massively overrepresented

And what exactly do you count Iceland and the Co-op as?

    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
