Yes, that's our East Dulwich workhouse mortuary table. The place where so many of our local poor elderly residents were scared of ending their days.

I have ancestors who where in there, and Gordon Road, Black Prince Road and the one in Crystal Palace for children. Looking up the records of these places gives you a really tragic picture of life and death amongst the poor.

There was origiannly a workhouse on St Francis Road, where the old St Francis Hospital was before it was pulled down about Fifteen years ago. I remember meeting a very old man who was terrified of being admitted to "The End of the Road" which is what it was apparently referred to when it was originally a work house.

In more recent times when it was a hospital - there were all manner of tales about hauntings in that building. I wonder if the people who live in the new development (between Sainsburys and East Dulwich Train Station) have any tales to tell...

I certainly haven't noticed any ghosts on my travels around St Francis Place. But thanks for that - I won't be sleeping soundly tonight! ::o

The name change from "Constance" to "St Francis" was a long time ago. It may have been 1937.
