Half of Peckham Rye Park - to the southeast of the lake - is in SE22, I assume that doesn't count as ED?

If you mean where I think you mean it would be Dulwich or Nunhead. Not Peckham.

Moot, isn't it? I'd call it Peckham Rye, given that it's Peckham Rye park and runs alongside Rye Lane. I always think of Nunhead as starting to the east of Rye Lane. Could well be wrong - pretty sure it's not Dulwich though!

thought Nunhead started from the Nun's head pub around there, how do you class Hollydale Road, St.Mary's Road - always thought of them being in Peckham;

Nunhead is as link below;

- Forgot to add, nothing wrong with living in Peckaham

Indeed - living in SE15 but being geographically closer to East Dulwich station than Peckham Rye we use a mate's description of East Peckwitch, which I think has a nice Dickensian ring to it (and is a damned sight better name than the ridiculous estate agent "Bellenden Village"!).

This map of east dulwich shows the boundary running down crystal palace road and up Upland road.

When it comes to voting all the Se22 addresses east and north of there are in Camberwell and Peckham !

Maybe if they are renting. If they've got a house to sell I suspect they wouldn't because rightly or wrongly the postcode would be likely to make a difference to value. You correctly identify that it matters to estate agents - that's because there is likely to be a price differential.

Yes - that's very much happening. The best thing about East Dulwich, is Peckham.

It certainly was the case 3-4 years ago when we last moved (to SE15). Now... the Bellenden/Goose Green side of Peckham doesn't seem any cheaper than ED to me. It's probably more expensive than some bits of SE22.

Abe ? that map is for the electoral ward of East Dulwich. A ward which shares the name of the broader suburb, but not necessarily the same border.

Many of the electoral wards in Southwark are not named that way, such as The Lane, Brunswick Park and Faraday. I doubt anyone would identify as living in Faraday.

So I don't think that is definitive for that reason. Also it misses out chunks at the bottom that most people would recognise as East Dulwich.

Also, proximity to a park or common bearing the name of one suburb doesn't mean that all touch-points are in that suburb. Clapham Common is an obvious example as the western end is Battersea and the southern end is Balham.

Can't resist, sorry.

The Postcodes define it all. If your address is SE15 you ain't in Dulwich.

Peckham Rye PARK is SE22

Peckham Rye COMMON is SE15.

(The Peckham Society get very excited about this when someone gets it wrong.)

There are two roads called Peckham Rye: the East side is SE15 (odd Numbers) and the west side is SE22 (even numbers).

Nunhead really should have been given its own postcode but of course it shares Peckham's being SE15.

Meanwhile, postcodes go alphabetically. But NW1 SW1 E1 SE1 N1 (NE is outside of London) are the areas closest to the centre. But then they start from A again after a while.

So you have:

SE2 Abbey Wood

SE3 Blackheath

SE4 Ummm

SE5 Camberwell

SE6 Catford

SE7 Charlton

SE8 Deptford

SE9 Errr

SE10 Greenwich

SE11 Hnnnhhh umm

Alan Bennett 'dissed' the place in one of his books. I whooped with joy when I read the above

(tho it's become easier now the overground is here, so I hope you're reading this and taking note Alan)

Endured in the ladies' wet changing room at Dulwich Leisure Centre just now:

Child repeatedly honking very loud horn on scooter (hello, hygiene, topic of many conversations with DLC).

Fond mother, very brightly repeating, 'That's a very annoying noise, isn't it?'

YES IT IS. JUST TELL HIM TO STOP.

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors?
