I received an email from a friend (who should know better) about this today, you know the sort:

>>>> Please forward this on to your friends, we cannot let them stop us from being British

>>> The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012

>>>London Olympics because they are deemed "too British"

etc etc

I see the online petition's got 185,000 signatures, kind of puts this online petition thing to shame really. Read something you don't like in the Sun and/or Daily Mail, believe it, then start a petition. There are 8,383 e-petitions on the government's e-petition site including Grant Liam Howlett a knighthood and, my favourite, make July 1st "Princess Diana Day".

Dilutes the strength of proper petitions which is annoying, looks like the days of direct action will be back before long.

Petitioning has been ruined by the advent of the 'electronic petition'.

The old stack of boxes disappearing into Number 10 (where those petitioning have personally filled-out their names and addresses in biro, wax crayon, paw print etc) actually meant something. There was a tangible link with the man hours involved to get the thing done.

Getting a courier to drop-off a CD-Rom (where the petitioners have clicked 'I agree' whilst dunking a doughnut and waiting for Facebook to load) doesn't have the same gravitas.

    • Happy Dan Hannan day everyone   https://substack.com/home/post/p-166594385
    • Yes, it seemed to have an underlying agenda, and a strange first post. That's really good that you took photos and gave them to the police. Hopefully the kids can be identified before they physically hurt someone (or cause further damage or distress).
    • Agreed Sue - I was suspicious of this post. The poster has only posted once, too.  If you were one of those kids, or you know them, I can tell you that I have some excellent photos of some of them on the roof, which I passed to the police.  What they did was assault.
    • Why? Unless there were distinctive features such as unusual clothing, how is that going to identify them, and even if it did, what would be the point, without photographic evidence that they had done anything wrong?
