Bad Old Days. ???

The Foresters was a Great boozer. Ok there were a few scrapes that lasted about 2 mins. but they were dealt with.

Did not need bouncers back then. Ok its the law, but The Bishop really does need them.

The Bishop has deteriorated over the years.

The EDT has bouncers but only needs them when Dreggs from the Bishop migrate there.

I don't think ED had many Palace fans back then, so I would doubt that.

It always used to be a predominately Millwall area, but I guess a lot of those people have moved on.

And due to Palace's continued tenure in the Premiership and family reputation, a lot of people who have moved in more recently, have adopted them as their team..

That is undoubtedly true. So it is quite possible that, once upon a time it was not a dump, but it certainly became one.

I came to visit a friend in ED in 1999 and we went for a beer in the foresters. it was absolutely fine.

I then moved to ED in 2001, and it was already a bit rougher than I remembered - by the time it closed it was a dive.

The Bishop is my least favourite pub in ED. its most recent refurb is horrible.

You didn't have to join in with the fighting if you didn't fancy it? Yeah right. Unless you 'looked funny'.

It was horrible!

The carpet was squidgy, and you could smell the stench from the gents from just about every seat in the pub.

ETA: Admittedly I'm only going back, oh, maybe twenty years?? So maybe it had passed its prime .....

Checked Beerintheevening - The foresters obviously didn't have any internet presence but some great early Bishop posts by Scott including in 2005

"the third rate magician is honing his act for his upcoming TV show, he charges nothing and is generally very well received. I guess had he been really good he would have made the scary youths disappear"

So most of the negative reviews of this pub come from the late 90's onwards. Let me just remind you all, East Dulwich existed 30/40/50 years ago too, and it was a massively popular pub back in the day. As was the Palmerston, and the Plough. Had some great times here, and if I hear the words 'dodgy' or 'rough' anymore ill run around my garden naked with a traffic cone on my head.

There was a major problem with the drainage right along that side / end oh LL at that time.

All outlets were affected from the Palmerston to the EDT

In the Bishop there is a Drain cover in the back bar area that would of been there when it was the Foresters.

The smell came from there, not the gents.

Strangely enough I made a rare visit to The Bishop a week or so ago. The gents was out of order blocked.

The EDT also still has problems. Don't know about other outlets but with so many Bars and Restaurants

along that stretch, I suspect Huge Fat Bergs build up from time to time.

"The carpet was squidgy, and you could smell the stench from the gents from just about every seat in the pub. "

That's because the punters used to wet themselves on the seats across which they were sprawled, when incapacitated by alcohol. So the whole place just stank of piss. That's why.

Fact.

    • Agreed, he should not be held accountable over the mess up over release of prisoners. On the other hand he did himself no favours with his gaffes on the BBC Master Mind programme where he passed on five questions. Where he did answer, here are some of his responses.... When asked who succeeded Henry VIII, Lammy incorrectly answered “Henry VII,” When asked which French scientist won Nobel prizes for both physics and chemistry?” Lammy responded with “Antoinette” When asked which fortress was built to defend Paris and later used as a prison, he answered “Versailles". When asked which variety of blue English cheese is often taken with port, he answered "Leicester" If nothing else he was entertaining.
    • Why do you think he should be toast? All these problems with the prison service apparently go way back, long before Labour took over.
