Perhaps a few [retired?] volunteers might approach the owners ? to - in the short-term run the public house ? Most costs are for staff wages and perhaps just opening in the evening ? 5pm Mon-Fri: Weekends 2pm-11pm. The owners might at least not want it uncoupled till they decide about its future: Might also be a time [while open] to gauge the appetite for a co-op type buy-out?

Agreed - loved it, however I find myself not having been there for a couple of years. I feel guilty.

This is a disaster. Pubs need to be profitable but sometimes an unpolished diamond-in-the-rough landlord comes along who creates something that's more about people, atmosphere and experience. Johnny is one of those. And the Gowlett was one of those rarities not seen locally since Inside72. Whilst he's probably hurting right now I'm sure he'll be back. He'll certainly have an army of supporters for his next venture.

My gut says they'll re-open but that things may be a little different. Let's hope that pizza oven fires up again soon.

In the meantime - thanks for all the good times.

It's a real shame about The Nines. Forza Win has tidied up too and become more of a conventional restaurant. Is Copeland yard undergoing blandification.

Yeah I'm disappointed about The Nines too, but the transformation of Forza Win is IMO a good thing and shows they're here for the long haul. Blandification? The negativity seems a little unnecessary.

Fair do's fishbiscuit - I was being a bit mischievous. To be fair, I haven't been to the new Forza, so it may be a very positive change. I did like the previous 'dining club' type model as it was a bit different, but I'm sure the new incarnation is also good. Bit gutted about the Nines though. Wonder what will replace it.
As a resident of Amott Road I can say the Johnny and crew was a welcome breath of fresh air to the Gowlett. He was a very nice chap and exactly what the area needed. I don't understand what went wrong... although there has been an influx of new Caf? and Bars but the Gowlett was a gem.

OK... just seen this message on Facebook "

?

It is with a heavy heart that today we have had to take the decision to close The Gowlett. We have been working for some time on a package to allow Jack and the team to continue in place but alas, time has today run out. It is still hoped that this will happen sooner rather than later but that was taken out of my hands this morning.

I can't even begin to apologise to the staff, customers, DJs, friends, suppliers and everyone else who have been involved in this being such an amazing place to be, enough. I've tagged a few of you here, but can't really think... I am broken.

Understandably, I won't be responding to stuff over the coming few days, as I have enough to deal with. My first efforts are to ensure the staff are taken care of.

I'll see you all on the other side of what this all may bring."

Thanks for this link. Let's hope they can re-open.

If you are using a shop which doesn't give an itemised receipt, or doesn't give a receipt at all, just be aware that it might be a good idea to check that you are not paying over the odds (and if using cash, that you are given the right change for what you handed over). When staff are busy they might make mistakes.
    • As I had a moan on here about the truly abysmal Christmas meal we had at The Cherry Tree last year, I am redressing the balance by saying we had a really excellent Christmas meal at Franklins last night. Every course was absolutely delicious and  really well cooked. The staff were lovely despite being exhausted and run off their feet. In particular, my sea bass was a large portion and cooked to perfection, in stark contrast to the small dried up portion The Cherry Tree provided, from which I was barely able to scrape a teaspoonful of flesh (that is not an exaggeration). And our Franklins meal cost less than half what we paid at The Cherry Tree (to be fair, that was on Christmas Day so the Cherry Tree costs would have been higher, but that doesn't excuse the appalling quality meal). Thank you again to Franklins for restoring our faith in eating out at Christmas!
