Councillors Support (Peckham) Station Initiative - But will they?

Recommended Posts

"Striking new images of plans to create a modern public realm in the heart of Peckham town centre have been shown to councillors........community councillors were asked to press Southwark Council to adopt the proposal as a proactive project whether the tram comes or not, and to commission a feasibility study as soon as possible"

Basically this is about "creating an open piazza surrounded by shops to replace the shabby buildings that currently occupy the site"

Great idea no? but will they find the funding?

go to www.peckhamvision.org for more info

How many millions have we poured into Peckham in the last few years? And now the anti-Tram Peckham Vision (i.e. Eileen) wants a complete overhaul of it's train station and plaza so it can go the way of the library and pool? Build it so they will tear it down?

My favourite campaign was about litter at the station. Again PV (Eileen) blamed the Council. No one ever thought to blame those who tossed litter.

Blame those dropping the litter certainly, but if the council do nothing to control a problem, then blame them too. Why not?

I just get personally peeved at the dependency culture we've created in Peckham. Anything they ask for they get - to the tune of millions and millions, likely billions. Yet the library is a mad house, the pool/leisure centre an unpleasant place, Bellendon struggling without subsidy...despite the mega investment, the people living there don't seem to take care of the place. So now they want a new train station makeover. No questions asked, give it to them!

Yet the poor cousin Camberwell has gotten zero. It's a long time bug bear. I'm hardly surprised.

Are these back-of-a-fag-packet figures Maurice or can you back them up?

Also your descriptions of various locations are subjective and I would argue these places are a big improvement on what was there before - ie the investment has had palpable improvement.

The train station - if it were scrubbed sparkly clean and maintained that way for FREE - remains an eyesore. Are you saying it shouldn't be improved? What suggestions do you have?

If not a penny was spent in Peckham over the last years there would have been zero negative impact upon your life in any shape size or form whatever and yet you bleat incessantly about all the waste.

you would make an excellent box ticker

I go to Peckham all of the time (my first visit was 89 or so) and if you can't see any positive difference in recent years you are wilfully ignoring it

By the by - are you coming to the FHT drinks in November? We can all have a proper chat over a beer on the subject ;-)

That's a view - an equally valid one would be a west of Ireland farmer with a field full of nothing but rocks

he could complain about how lush his neighbour's field is or he could spend a long long time without any apparant reward - and finally get a field full for fertile soil

Or another comparison:

A bank, let's call them Not Southern Soft Bank, who get themselves in fix. Pouring billions of our money in to fix THEIR problem is the lesser of two evils. We are spending billions to not even stay where we were - but compared to the possible oblivion which might happen otherwise....

The station should be cleaned and scrubbed and maintained. Also, the area directly around it should be beautified as much as possible, but I hold out little hope as it involves rail companies, politicians versus a small number of committed people. Nero
Just a small question, just how long has Peckham been part of East Dulwich? At various stages, I have lived worked and been to school in Peckham from 1968 onwards. Peckham has never, repeat NEVER been part of ED. Why is Peckham relevant to a forum dedicated to ED issues?

I do feel for the Peckham lot. They have a website driven by one woman's ego and she doesn't allow dissent. She comes here in hopes of driving traffic but doesn't allow any debate. Besides, there are very few in Peckham who care enough to get involved. It's the same small lot.

Give 'em a little 'Lounge' time. Camberwell is similar. A bit more chatter but no action. ED has engaged residents.

"See also nunhead issues ad nauseum"......oh sorry mockers am i disturbing you ?

Maybe these things are being raised here because we all share the same councillors, people ED residents vote in get to control budgets in Nunhead, Peckham etc, and decisions made in one area area hopefully made in consideration of another...hopefully....so that's why we are here

Maybe we should shut Peckham Rye station and all routes out of ED.......but hey no doubt.....you live in a self sustainable bubble so that would not effect you ?

"oh sorry mockers am i disturbing you ?"

Not at all, boring me maybe, but you'll be glad to know I always blunder through life in a self sustainable bubble.

Aren't I nice though, I found you this terrific, and I think you'll agree, jolly well laid out and usable nunhead forum.

And do please come along to a forum drinks if you're going to get all familiar with me Nunners ;-)

Oh the joy.....looks like I am not the only one ! 4 responses on the forum

"I am looking at a property by the Cemetary however I have heard that Nunhead Grove, Tappesfield Rd and Daniels Road are a problem areas with conmen, gangs of kids and general trouble. Can somone confirm if this is true please?"

"i have been living here now for over 20 yrs i am close to danials road and tappersfield and the cemetary, as remarked by one reader there is no trouble here, yobs, or conmen."

"I've been in the area a few years & sure its is a little rough around the ages but basically safe. The dangers as such are mostly presentational rather than actual & more the kind of thing you could do without if you are an advanced OAP."

"Hi all, I have lived in Nunhead for 6 years now. There are no gangs of kids and no secret cabal of conmen. Most of the groups of kids I see, finish schools go home and get changed and hang out together. When you get to know the community you see 'gangs with hoods' as children of neighbours and friends. The biggest threat to life in Nunhead is the absolute apathy of the councils regeneration commitee led by LibDem Executive Member Richard 'hoodie' Thomas."

Thanks boy in a bubble, actually I was getting familiar with your internet persona, a kind of fantasy identity, slightly etherial if you get my ...drift...snow....don't get to controlling by trying to bring aspects of the real world into the unreal world of the ED forum.......and definately do not eat the yellow snow.....but thanks for the forum link....maybe we should have a separate Nunhead blog and then we would not have to put up with these interlopers

Maurice, it is funny that you say that there are very few in Peckham who care enough to get involved, as a representitive of the trading community from peckham we do get involved with trying to improve the town centre and facilities for everyone. unlike others, we are also interested in debate and welcome peoples opinions (good or bad) on the town centre, without opinions, forums and other forms of feedback we won't know what people like, want and equally don't want.

With regard to the station, in principle (and I have to say in principle as it will have ramifications for traders) we welcome the concept of opening up the station forecourt to make it more attractive for visitors, and hopefully it will be partially finded by Ken's 100 squares for London, Southwark Council and other stakeholders in the town centre (who knows maybe partly funded by the tram complimentry measures)

We also have a forum on our website (under utilised at the moment and hopefully we can ask people to comment on it as well as here so that we can hear what they are thinking about Peckham Town Centre)

As a final (and it amuses me) comment

Our much belined friend in the posts above (lone voice) supports opening up the station forecourt, which will result in businesses in front of the station being relocated, yet uses the argument that by putting a tram depot in Peckham town centre businesses will be lost or forced to relocate as a result.... now if that isn't having your cake and eating it I don't know what is....

    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
