I've been to Plum Valley and Tao Tao Ju in the last six months. I would say Plum Valley is a bit better for food but the service is perfunctory and they get very keen about you leaving when they have a queue of people. At Tao Tao Ju the food was a bit more hit and miss (especially the dim sum) but the service was much better. Both do crispy duck. Both are at the ?10 per main level. I wouldn't say either is a standout recommendation, but the food was decent.

The place I want to try is Xu on Rupert Street, which is Taiwanese food - so no crispy duck - and more pricey, but someone I work with raves about it.

It depends where the good chefs are working, and they do move. The chefs employ all the kitchen staff (possibly the waiters too?). When they have a disagreement with the restaurant owner or get poached, then suddenly the quality changes overnight. So to an extent you need to be wary of older reviews, and judge based on what you see on the day.

    • Well I did say I stand to be corrected! Fair enough, their website only seemed to list three branches. Perhaps it's a franchise model?  It's known as 'agglomeration' in economics Rookie error.
    • I didn't know there was a word for that — thanks!
    • This is just normal business behaviour. That's why there are so many coffee shops in ED and shops selling gifts and interiors stuff, clothes, restaurants.  If there's more than one business of a similar type then it can benefit all of them up to a saturation point and keep up quality. It's all sounding like many think Chango has made a malicious move when it actually sounds like it's owned by one guy who has a good business that has done well.   Anyway this is all great advertising for both empanada places. Very close by is the organic grocer who sells really good value and very tasty samosas and other Indian snacks which are also worth trying.
