The last reincarnation of the Flying Pig was a disaster (ETA: In my opinion).

Sorry, but it just didn't deserve to succeed.

We spent many happy times in there in the past on the sofa playing Scrabble, but something went very very wrong.

Last time we were there, the bar had cleaning stuff just lying around in full sight. I suppose at least that meant they were cleaning it :))

I had a coffee in Aneto today, late morning. It was quite busy for a new venture, people having brunch, teas and coffees with their families. All tables at the back were full.

Menu looks good, contemporary but with a full English option at ?9.95.

The place feels lighter and airier that was previously the case.

There are about 6 bar taps and signage that says that there is an evening service, although I didn't see an evening menu.

I will miss the Pig, but perhaps this is a better bet for a site that is close to a school, Goose Green, Peckham Rye the children's playground and sees lots of family footfall between all of those.

I was never a fan of The Flying Pig. Found it lacking in Soul and never seemed that busy.

I Used to use the place quite often when it was Locale. That too was never really busy.

I suspect its a question of its location. Could prove to be a great Day Time summer location.

Personally, super excited that Aneto has expanded! Always been the best breakfasts and coffees around. And now it's bigger and better, serving alcohol and evening plates... http://www.anetocafe.com/menu/

Wines are organic and well sourced, tons of vegan and veggie options... Damiano and Amandine are great people, we wish them luck with the new place and can't wait to spend more time there.

Go try!!

I thought the same, It?s a bit of a stinker that one. There?s often a slightly puffed up feel about these ?plugging? posts.

?Wines are organic and well sourced? ?Can?t wait to spend more time there?

I was almost wetting myself with excitement when I first heard we were getting a craft beer and bbq joint. But the beer was just that little bit too expensive, and the bbq (which was only OK) disappeared after a few months. The space felt soulless and vaguely reminiscent of somewhere you'd eat at an airport or shopping mall.

But I'm glad the Aneto guys are expanding, they seem like nice people and we go there for breakfast quite often. Are Aneto now occupying both premises, or is the old Aneto site now vacant?

Both Locale and the Pig followed the same path - good to begin with and then went downhill.

I liked the bar end of the Pig, good beer and the bar staff were nice chatty people, albeit occasionally a bit scatty.

Its a difficult space to use well, that back area is cavernous and its easy to lose atmosphere.

It ended up being a quiet place where I went if I wanted a quiet drink - but that has it's uses and it wasn't a space with bad feelings - I'm not always looking to party :).

The Ales I found many were too strong unless you just wanted to taste (those one/third pint things) - but they did have session beer/lager as well.

Had a huge screen - ironic it's gone as the six nations starts.

I did ask this further back but guess it's not known. Will venture in there during the week and ask them.

    • This is simply untrue. The area is not 2/3 storeys maximum. Hambledon Court is on the other side of tracks from the Jewson site on Burrow Rd, is 8 storeys, and is barely known (let alone bothersome) to most people in East Dulwich. Felbridge House, Petworth House etc on the opposite side of the station from the new development are all 5 storeys tall. East Dulwich Charter (which neighbours the new development) is itself 4-5 storeys (depending on which block you're talking about). What's more, Hambledon Court was finished in about 1978 iirc and no-one has built anything similar around here since then - so the "slippery slope" "genie in the bottle" argument doesn't work either. You can't simultaneously argue that Southwark is too slow in approving new construction but also suggest this will lead to a flood of new high-rise housing! At current rates of approval, we can expect our next 8 storey building to arrive in...2072!
    • I checked - the Hanway Street place was Mandeer - it moved to New Oxford Street I think and was replaced by Hakkasan - very different prices.
    • Suppose it depends on how many Christmas cards from family and friends you’re waiting to receive. It’s been the Christmas period so surely give the post delivery service some leeway. Like Sue I’ve not posted off so many this year but some I still write letters to  e.g my late mum’s cousins and other family  but hey ho that’s something I do and enjoy.  I used to hand deliver Christmas cards to a lot of neighbours on my street but gave up this year as realised that most of them I don’t see or speak to and can only count on a few to call a true friend or neighbour.
