Zero waste shop

Hi there,

I lived in California where I used to shop in a big grocery store, built as a cooperative (all the employees were also owners of the place). It was a zero waste shop and I loved it. I loved the idea son much that I wanted to bring it here. Looking for a partner in crime for a while, but couldn't really find one. Please feel free to PM me to talk about it.

Do they do the later versions of washing up liquid rather than the horrible clinical smelling original ?

There's a new packaging-free shop in Nunhead (near Ayres and Sopers) which does washing up liquid (as well as lots of other things)

There is a new zero waste shop opening soon in Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill opening soon. Owned by Aga's Deli I believe. 176 bus door to door....

Really like nunheads BYO and it?s next door to excellent coffee.

Nah it?s too annoying. Also the plastic waste in the uk doesn?t really end up in the sea or landfill as we?ve got recycling infrastructure. Though arguably it?s still pretty wasteful

Riggghtt! We just ship much of our plastic off for someone else to deal with: maybe recycled there; maybe dumped or landfill.

Aga and Anna (of Aga's Little Deli, Dartmouth Rd) are indeed opening a zero-waste greengrocer just a bit further along from the deli/cafe on Dartmouth Rd at the start of next year. Very exciting, as I know they are researching and sourcing a lot of great products for the shop.

Just wanted to say that - like many of us - I?m trying to reduce my household waste and karavan have been fab with refilling my soap/washing up liquid/detergent bottles. They?ll refill any bottle that has a measurement on it, so it doesn?t need to be in an ecover bottle.

Yes this is a great service. You can also take along a measuring jug to fill up bottles. Also has anyone used Naked Larder in Herne Hill. Great way to buy dry stuff without packaging.

Many years ago in Blenheim Grove Peckham, there was a sop where you could purchase things like cereals, dried fruit etc using your own containers. It was part of a larger organisation London wide. Cannot remember the name but was always very busy. Worked out cheaper as well and you could buy as little or as much as you wish.

Yep Pugwash I mentioned that. It was a darn site cheaper than the one in Nunhead too working out cheaper than buying a new box of bran flakes or whatever. Sadly I can not afford to get my shopping at this shop.

While I would welcome more, there is a zero waste shop in Nunhead called BYO. It's great, well stocked, but only open Wednesday to Saturday (I think).

BYO is now open Tuesday-Sunday. It?s where we currently shop, and I agree, it?s really good. Laura (the owner) is lovely, too.

I second BYO in Nunhead too. I get a lot of stuff there. In fact, I think Nunhead is a great place to do lots of shopping. There is a good butcher, a good greengrocer and a good fishmonger. We've cut down our plastic use considerably by shopping in Nunhead rather than Sainsburys.
