Joey Barton? :))

Roy Hodgson has left Ferdinand out his squad completely. Fine. But why include Terry? Bit of a cop out Roy I'm afraid. Nice to see the Ox is being given a chance to show what he can do. Not a bad squad overall, and th fact that nobody really expects Englnad to do wekk MIGHT actually work in thier favour. Comments EDFers?

I don't feel inspired by the selection but pleased to see the Ox.

I'd guess Terry was chosen for his experience. Should England qualify for the next two rounds then they should face Spain but have no chance in beating them. I think it would have been better to blood more youngsters in preparation for the world cup.

Not as many new faces as I thought there would be, but pleased to see AOC in there, and pleased he's made Gerrard captain (and hope it will make him up his game in an England shirt).

Not so pleased to see Downing in there, and amazed Carroll has gotten in to the squad off the back of a couple of good performances at the arse end of the season!

I dunno, given Roy's proclivities I think he could fit neatly into the side better than he has done at Liverpool.

He's yet young and unproven but I think with interntaional experience he could be really good and he's the sort of striker that actually can give pause for thought to a defence.

Carroll obviously in for set pieces in place of Crouch - don't know if he'll feature much after Rooney returns unless he plays really well..

Surprised Joe Cole didn't get a call from the man who signed him for Liverpool, but maybe that's why - even though he's not had a bad season in France... (Harry would have picked him)... surely a better stand-by than Henderson?

I dunno how Downing gets into ANY squad. Hopeless.

A shame to see so many of the same old faces in the squad but not really many better players to put in. The problem is Wilshere, Cleverley and maybe Rodwell were all injured so you have to stick with Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, hope Gerrard's form improves.

Could have had Sturridge in the squad rather than Downing and maybe Carrick rather than Barry. Crouch has never done it against the top teams, so Carroll is the best alternative.

Other than Rio v Terry I don't think there is much else to debate. Richards looks great but a few managers, including Mancini, seem to have their reservations.

Shame Harry didn't get the job but perhaps long term Hodgson is the better bet for English football.

Dagleish gone - the red shite needs to snap up free agent Mikey Owen for your next old boy manager - maybe hes not racist enough though, but Im sure he will pick it up quickly, hes only 32

Actually, Paulo De Canio, that loveable old fascist rogue may be available soon, given his recent issues at Swindon - get in there quick before Chelsee snap him up - its rare that such a good fit comes along

    • Post much better this Xmas.  Sue posted about whether they send Xmas cards; how good the post arrives is relevant.
    • These have reduced over the years, are "perfect" lives Round Robins being replaced by "perfect" lives Instagram posts where we see all year round how people portray their perfect lives ?    The point of this thread is that for the last few years, due to issues at the mail offices, we had delays to post over Christmas. Not really been flagged as an issue this year but I am still betting on the odd card, posted well before Christmas, arriving late January.
    • Two subjects here.  Xmas cards,  We receive and send less of them.  One reason is that the cost of postage - although interestingly not as much as I thought say compared to 10 years ago (a little more than inflation).  Fun fact when inflation was double digits in the 70s cost of postage almost doubled in one year.  Postage is not a good indication of general inflation fluctuating a fair bit.  The huge rise in international postage that for a 20g Christmas card to Europe (no longer a 20g price, now have to do up to 100g), or a cheapskate 10g card to the 'States (again have to go up to the 100g price) , both around a quid in 2015, and now has more than doubled in real terms.  Cards exchanged with the US last year were arriving in the New Year.  Funnily enough they came much quicker this year.  So all my cards abroad were by email this year. The other reason we send less cards is that it was once a good opportunity to keep in touch with news.  I still personalise many cards with a news and for some a letter, and am a bit grumpy when I get a single line back,  Or worse a round robin about their perfect lives and families.  But most of us now communicate I expect primarily by WhatApp, email, FB etc.  No need for lightweight airmail envelope and paper in one.    The other subject is the mail as a whole. Privitisation appears to have done it no favours and the opening up of competition with restrictions on competing for parcel post with the new entrants.  Clearly unless you do special delivery there is a good chance that first class will not be delivered in a day as was expected in the past.   Should we have kept a public owned service subsidised by the tax payer?  You could also question how much lead on innovation was lost following the hiving off of the national telecommunications and mail network.
    • Why have I got a feeling there was also a connection with the beehive in Brixton on that road next to the gym
