I was away for a while I am so sad to hear about John at Chener Books. He was SO knowledgeable and posted a lot on here about local history. He was lovely and funny and friendly and sometimes even gave me free old maps! That's so sad. I would have loved to have attended his funeral if I had been here.

His funeral was private, I believe. I understand that the family didn't want John's sad death generally known until after the funeral had taken place.

There was talk of a memorial service of some kind, but I don't know whether that is still planned.

Jacqueline Pearce the actress who played the iconic character Servalan in 70s TV series Blake's Seven has died. Without question Servalan was one of the best villains in TV science fiction.

Jeremy Hardy - spoke with him once after a benefit at the Half Moon, he was a charming, self-deprecating man who had time for everyone. Friends who lived on the same road as him in Streatham found him a delightful neighbour. Plus, of course, he was astoundingly funny, especially when improvising on shows like The News Quiz and ISIHAC (and nobody will ever forget his singing!). A great loss.
So sad. Occasionally the death of someone famous who you never met feels like losing a friend, a genuine pang of loss. I saw him at a number of News Quiz recordings where some of his more outrageous and biting flights ended up on the cutting room floor. A great privilege to be there for that.

    • Absolutely gutted to hear that Dell Autos in Hansler Road is closing tomorrow. They have MOTed my ancient 1998 Micra for years, and have always been brilliant. Wishing them all the best of luck in their retirement. Wishing all their customers (including me) luck in finding another garage as honest, helpful, efficient and friendly as they were.

    • Crikey. I need a lie down in a darkened room after reading that. And I've only just got up 🤣 Well said, though (apart from the annoying use of "woke").
