mockney piers
The point about thirds was more that the first two were rubbish and relatively unknown rather than a good third album. If someone manages a ninth I'll take my hat off to them, and probably eat it too!! StraferJack
Lambchop's 9th album, "Damaged" was pretty fine. Not their best, no but pretty fine for a 9th album Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19660-best-debut-albums/page/5/#findComment-478107 Share on other sites
StraferJack
and a vote for SoM's "First and Last and Always" as a great debut album Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19660-best-debut-albums/page/5/#findComment-478108 Share on other sites
mockney piers
Yo La Tengo's ninth effort was a actually a bit of an odd one. Still very good but not very YLT.Vaguely surprised they didn't do it as a side-project release like the marvellous two recording session, garage effort Fuckbook by The Condofucks. And yes SJ, I almost posted that one myself. *Bob*
I don't think you'd ever find a 'pure nine', but the closest I can get is probably Lou Reed's Street Hassle, because there are so many utterly abysmal efforts along the way. Not to mention some of the worst album covers ever (for a a major artist at any rate). Not that Street Hassle is a great album exactly, but the main ten-minute track of the same name makes everything worthwhile. You just have to make sure you get to the stop button before 'I Wanna Be Black' starts - and ruins everything again. mockney piers
Thinking about it, U2 has the anti-pure 9th album, zooropa, a case of should'a quit whilst you were ahead (although rattle & hum arguably could fit the bill, though I am partial to Achtung Baby) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19660-best-debut-albums/page/5/#findComment-478151 Share on other sites
mockney piers
Ooh ohh, Dinosaur jr came back from the dead after 10 years with their ninth, 'Beyond' which ranks with their best work. StraferJack
Nooo ? I like Zooropa. A ballad with Johnny Cash singing. And the falsetto thrill of Lemon? It?s a fun album. And that?s not something you can say about U2 oftenI?ve long been a non-fan of U2, but Achtung Baby, Zooropa and the much-derided Pop, have genuinely great stuff on themAll of the other albums I can pretty much leave (although I like the title track from Unforgettable Fire. And some of the Passengers stuff) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19660-best-debut-albums/page/5/#findComment-478155 Share on other sites
mockney piers
ok i was harsh, i liked some of zooropa too, but i think it's the start of them becoming parodies of themselves and pretty much when I lost interest. No time for the early tuff then? War can transport me right back to my youth and it still sounds fresh today. StraferJack
when they gave up the "european" stuff and claimed they wanted to reclaim being "the best rock band in the world" again, that's when they became parodies of themselvesNo time at all for the first three albums I'm afraid. I'm not saying there isn't anything good on them but lordy they are earnest. And they do transport me to a time and place - but not a great one Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19660-best-debut-albums/page/5/#findComment-478205 Share on other sites
beef
Prince's ninth, Diamond and Pearls, not my favourite and probably his last great lp.Felt's tenth, Me the Monkey and the Moon.Yo La Tengo's eleventh, I am not afraid of you and will beat your ass, best title ever hands down.Acid Mother's Temple thirty fourth, Lady Pink Lemonade. Had to wiki that albums position.I'm finding it hard to find bands in my collection that get beyond their first or second album, yet alone a decent third. There are a few tho' that shine with longevity (Super Furry Animals, Ash, Boredoms....) KidKruger
"Also Bert Jansch's first album, considering he was like 19 and all, and allegedly people starting reconsidering acoustic guitar as an instrument and how it could be played (so I read somewhere). Jeremy
If the brief was to find an album which brought mainstream attention following relative obscurity... none of the 9th or 6th albums listed count, and neither do many of the 3rds!! mockney piers
That was the brief, absoluteley true of the 6ths and 9ths, but then you'd be hard pressed to actaully find tht. It's hard enough finding bands that made it to 9 at all.Agree about most of the 3rds, though some pretty good efforts at it tucked in there. I did say it was hard, in fact it was more a musing if any existed!
