Regardless of the reasons, this is terribly sad for the family involved. I can't even begin to think about how I would feel if this was a member of my family or a dear friend. Our thoughts should be with the family at this difficult time.

So true....but talking about this won't bring about a much needed change...people need to gather and march, protest.

the only way to bring about change is to gather together as one strong voice...and MAKE them i.e.; the powers that be listen.

or all we will get as we have seen repeatedly by this government and mayor are empty promises and press worthy soundbites to subdue the feelings of discontent we all feel.

I personally thank god I do not have the worry of bringing up a teenage boy in London today on a council estate like the one I myself grew up in-I would s**t myself every time he was late home from school, or popped out to hang on the streets with his mates like I and my friends did, or even went out to get a takeaway.

People vote for low taxes-I'd rather pay more tax and see it spent on decent social housing, education, healthcare, and policing.

all the counties resources are overstretched due to government cuts-those who voted for the present bunch of self satisfied muppets are seeing the outcome of the constant cutbacks.

I myself have been approached more than once by aggressive beggars on the overground and on the streets locally

but for the grace of god I have been safe when refusing to hand over cash, or cigarettes( I don't smoke but if I did at about ?10 a packet I wouldn't give one away if asked)

As long as there is no policing on our streets and not enough staff to man or repair the street CCTV this kind of senseless violence will continue.

I spent much of the 80's in NYC in really scuzzy areas where crime was rife but y'know what? I felt safer there because there were always cop cars cruising or parked at busy intersections as well as police on the streets.

Other reports including met police say the man charged lives on Lordship Lane.

Seems like this 24 Yr old adult stabbed and killed someone on his own street, by himself (not trying to impress his mates), for a cigarette.

Given these circumstances I would question his mental health (and I bet it will form part of his defense).

If found to be sane and guilty, I hope he receives a full life term.

I don't see how we can blame society for this; poverty or lack of opportunity is not an excuse for this disgusting disregard for human life.

Of course, it's an insult to the vast majority of people living in poverty and lacking opportunity both in the UK (and more so globally) who don't resort to murder and crime to blame everything on Society/poverty

Defendant found guilty at the Old Bailey today, he is being sentenced on Tuesday.

Sadly (for me) its down to the sentencing.

Travesty if he gets like 20yrs, and is released in 10 for good behaviour.

If he does get 'life' on average he will serve 15 years before being eligible for parole, based on his behaviour and reports in prison. He will always then be 'on licence' and could be returned to prison if he breaches his parole terms. Judges can set higher minimum terms before he would become eligible for parole.
