my garden seems to be attracting local cats, what can I do to keep them away

Recommended Posts

Last summer there were hardly any cats around in my garden, but recently there are a least 5 that turn up all the time. They are not neighbours cats.

I've tried cat repellent, doesn't seem to work, coffee grounds, still no luck.

I would just like to know what works for other people.

Thanks.

Shazza

"Silent Roar" from the Dulwich Garden Centre (and lots of other places). It's basically lion poo, which tells the other cats that a sodding big cat controls the area and they should crap elsewhere. Works a treat. Not cheap though.

I live in hope that The Lion of Zion will one day eat reggie

Hardly the wrong answer woodrot. If the OP had mentioned at the beginning that these are pesky cats that spray everyhere and dig up her/his garden then I wouldn't have posted my comment, but he/she just seemed peeved that cats were in her garden which I found a bit weird.cats bury their poo so I don't see what the big deal is- unless they're digging up your plants to bury their poo in in which case I do have sympathy. cats also don't generally smell, unless they're unneautered and spray everywhere.
Cats only bury their poo in deference to another cat or to a human they recognise as their owner. Otherwise, they will leave it uncovered to mark the territory as theirs. Usually smack bang in the middle of the lawn, in my experience.

That's not true Loz. I have cats come into my front garden to go to the loo and they always bury it. I couldn't say whether they're my neighbours cats as cats have a way of wandering about. of course they are domestic cats but just because a cat comes into your garden and you don't recognise it, it doesn't mean it's feral.

Cat's are clean animals- it's in their nature. Only dominant feral cats may not bury their poo to mark their territory but otherwise it's very rare.

Have mentioned before on the site that I've found that mothballs work for me around 90% of the time - the cats don't like the smell. Cheap to buy from one of the hardware shops on LL and you just need to replace every so often as they gradually dissolve in the rain etc.

Sorry Zeban, but there is lots of info out there to confirm my understanding. Here's one site. Your standard domestic cat will dump uncovered if it wants to mark territory.

Otherwise ED must be full of feral cats, judging by the number of wars with lawn-crapping cats I've had.

    • But Thatcher is dead. Nobody since has brought the utilities back under public ownership (if that's the right term). So there are many people who could be blamed. Meanwhile the shareholders get richer and everyone else gets increasing bills and a poorer service. Plus as said above, a massive waste of a limited resource like water. Not to mention the polluted rivers and seas. At least the privatisation of the railways is being reversed. Hopefully water may be on the list somewhere.
    • That's really helpful. Do the Community Councils still exist? It sounds to me that whoever the contact is on the council who has sorted out the North Cross Road notice board and put the new list of councillors in it must at least have access to the key for that one? Unless it was one of the unlocked ones. And of course if somebody knows where the keys are, they may have no idea that people are looking for them or that this forum thread exists. Which are the notice boards which are not locked?  The very helpful locksmith near the station (?Callows?)  might be able to provide keys for them, or if not, new locks, in return for some local publicity? In fact, they may be able to advise in general, rather than keep trying unresponsive people at the council. But then of course there is still the question of who is going to take responsibility for putting appropriate East Dulwich community information into them and updating it as necessary.
    • Our residents' association used to have keys many moons ago, but when locks were changed, we tried everyone (including ward councillors) to get keys to no avail. A couple of boards are not locked. The Community Councils originally paid for all the notice boards in Dulwich. May have come under the Cleaner Greener budget.
    • Blame Margaret Thatcher - she started the privatization of public utilities.
