Looking at our garden today it looks like somebody might have been trying to break into our house, several tools from outside have been moved about and lids (with bird food in...sorry burglars) taken off boxes, clematis all torn off the side of the fence, pots moved (to clear access to windows). I know it doesn't sound like much but I happened to come home at 4.30 am and went in to the kitchen, it may be that I frightened them off when I switched the lights on. Ivanhoe is a target for burglars anyway as it backs on to the railway, and a while back there was a really big bout of burglaries on our road, our house being one of the ones targeted.

Seems like a no-brainer to be vigilant at all times, but I know our household gets sloppy with it sometimes...forgetting to take all laptops, ipods etc out of the kitchen or forgetting to screw the windows down in particular. Be extra careful!

Also, irritatingly the back wheel of my bike was stolen from my bike which was locked up in my front garden. My own fault entirely - living in Oxford I get out of the habit of double locking my bike so when I'm back in London I forget to. F***ING BURGLARS!!

Good points - remember that thieves are opportunists - if they can find tools for B & E on site they don't have to risk carrying those about with them. That's why sheds are often hit first, their security if often weak and they may have tools/ ladders which enable greater thievery. Padlock ladders in particular - first floor entry is frequently easier than ground floor, weaker/ no locks, windows left slightly open etc.
I used to live on Ivanhoe road moved around 6 years ago it was bad then for burglary too, both my neighbours were burgled one night my mum distracted him as she heard someone outside the back and opened the window, police were called but they didnt find him.:X

    • I agree... perhaps you could also write to our local councillors to point these things out. Never know they might actually reply! Thanks for your help speaking to Monica. She may hopefully have useful contacts re obtaining a key. Completely agree - what's on (which could include some small businesses  such as Theatre Peckham, which I think may be a charity or at least community not for profit? And school fairs type thing..) plus anything the community would find useful, such as free events for the elderly (LinkAge are active in ED and surrounding areas) and lots more.
    • Thanks that’s all really useful.
    • Looks like they have massive issues with numbers of visitors too... “People have literally just arrived and are refusing to leave. Chaos. They booked out all the lane spaces but let people in. Absolute sh*t show.” https://www.the-londoner.co.uk/were-police-called-to-brockwell-lido/
    • I agree that someone somewhere must at one point decided on their purpose, however if anything was ever written down it is probably long lost, given the turnover of councillors and council staff . The Crofton Park noticeboards I mentioned above are solely for information about the council  and various community groups and activities, plus  various community related things such as the library times and services.  I think they are very bright, interesting and inviting, however I am not going back there solely in order to take a photo The ones in East Dulwich don't have much on them because ... well, for the reasons on this thread 🤣 Quite apart from the fact that these are supposed to be community notice boards, there are all sorts of reasons why they should not be used for private businesses to advertise, as I and others have already said. Yes there have been huge changes in the area, but I can't see how those changes affect the purpose of community noticeboards, unless you think that the changes mean that there is no longer a "community" in East Dulwich. Which would be very sad indeed. Anyway, I am stepping away from this thread now, I have other things to do 🙄
