"In a segment on the television series This Hour Has 22 Minutes during the 2000 American election, Rick Mercer convinced then-Governor of Texas George W. Bush that Canada's Prime Minister, Jean Chr?tien, was named Jean Poutine and that he was supporting Bush's candidacy. A few years later when Bush made his first official visit to Canada, he joked during a speech, "There's a prominent citizen who endorsed me in the 2000 election, and I wanted a chance to finally thank him for that endorsement. I was hoping to meet Jean Poutine." The remark was met with laughter and applause."

lol

I was in Sea Cow last last and Dan was there behind the counter. I was most impressed by the steps he seems to have taken to respond to the criticism on here. Moment I walked in the door he recognised me and arranged for my customary cup of tea to be served straight away. The salmon I got was a real change from what had gone before (I never thought it had ever been THAT bad before, mind) - it was moist, beautifully cooked and the chips were spot on. It was a very noticeable change all round. On the way out I told him I was impressed and he told me a few of the tangible changes they had made to get standards back up again - all fish cooked fresh to order rather than being cooked and put in a hot cupboard (he removed the cupboard door to make this impossible), chips not used within five minutes chucked out, etc. The difference shows!

They have clearly taken notice of the feedback they got and raised their game. Well done to all. I told him I would post on here about my experience. Before any cynics leap in, I still had to pay full price which I was happy to do.

Last night, for the first time in nearly 3 months I went in for 3 x Cod and chips to take away. Cod was finished so I opted for the Coley instead.

First time I've tasted it. Cod it isn't but I was still very impressed. The fish was fresh, a good sized portion, well battered and the chips were delicious and crunchy without being too hard. Coley is firmer in texture, not light and flakey like Cod. It's a little grey in colour and has an easy flavour, perhaps a little bland but not unpleasantly so. As I waited (10 mins but well worth it) you could see that the fryers were really putting in a lot of effort to ensure the best possible result.

Good job Paul, Dan and all. I'll definitely be back more often now. Coley is a good alternative to Cod and if you haven't tried it yet I recommend you do.

Hi guys,

Sorry to drag up a slightly old thread, but my boyf and I are planning to visit Dulwich for the first time this weekend. As we're pining for the now-closed Stoke Newington Sea Cow (altho the owners won't admit it for some reason) we thought we'd have lunch there. Now the Stokey one was very hit-and-miss too, which is probably why it failed, so I googled it to find reviews and found this forum. It's great to see the owners are reading and are sorting things out, but has anyone been in the last month? We'd hate to have a bad meal on our day out and would rather find an alternative if necessary.

Thanks for your help, Lou

It's just a day trip to explore E&WD! I've been in London almost 7 years, need to visit South London more!!!

Just wanted to add to the comments about the improvements at the seacow. We hadn't been for about a year as our previous meals there hadn't been great. Following the comments on this thread we gave it another go last week. The service was lovely and the fish and chips were great- the chips in particular were dramatically improved from our previous visits. They've clearly worked hard to improve things and it shows. The only worry was that at 9pm on a Thurs night there were only 6 people in there. Hopefully things will pick up for them soon.

    • Yes they do, but that is not the core tenet of representative democracy. At that level, we are voting for a parliamentary representative, irregardless of whether parties exist or not. It's why candidates can stand as independents.
    • Sadly I think you will never convince people like this. They think gardens have to be kept chopped back and controlled. My theory is that this comes from being (or trying to be) controlling in every aspect of their lives, so I doubt if anything you could say or show them would have any effect. But are they actually coming into your garden or leaning over into it and pulling up/damaging things? If so, maybe one of our community police people could have a word with them?
    • Dear Nature lovers - advice please. I am being harassed by a neighbour who doesn't like my standard of gardening which she calls 'messy'. (I have rewilded my garden with advice from the London Wildlife Trust and a gardening expert from The Times.) I have twice caught this neighbour and her husband pulling up my plants and damaging my trees. Plus she has photographed my house, and sent a dozen complaints to the Dulwich Estate about my plan to rewild the verge outside my property - approved by the Estate some 4 years ago in line with their stated policy of supporting biodiversity in and around Dulwich. What can I do to introduce these neighbours  to the benefits to us all of returning a portion of our gardens to nature?
