I have a slight persona on the EDF which has toned down over time..

I'm more polemic, contrary, 'right wing', non-consensual and proleetrian than I am in real life...but keep it stum

Facebook I am pretty much who I am but steer clear of contraversy - ie politics/drug references etc for all sorts of reasons including family (including my own kids not that far away)

Twiiters - just tweeting would be shame enough. Hate the place and tweets etc. Yet to read any tweet that has mede me think, laugh or think wow what a cool person/tweet etc etc. Really is the worse of social networking imo. Sorry SJ!

I think who I am on here is a small part of who I am in real life. Most people are multi-faceted, so one forum is unlikely to reflect all their nuances. The EDF is good for community stuff, but less useful for intelligent debate on controversial subjects because of the trolls and aggressive posters.

I hold it down on here, because I'm a bore when I get on one about politics and can't be arsed with the arguments. Twitter is my release in that regard and sometimes Facebook.

I like facebook for sharing pics of my kids with family and friends who live far away. I do use it quite a lot, but refuse to get involved in any of the stupid apps.

I've never bothered with Twitter, although it's great that it gives the likes of Joey Barton unlimited rope with which to hang himself.

Lol, yes Facebook is good for keeping up to date with my family and old friends who are spread around the globe, but I block all the stupid apps and my privacy settings are pretty high.

Twitter is my access to news, politics and law.

EDF is my access to community and gives me an insight into the minutia of middle-class angst!

Edited to say, I personally preferred the EDF a couple of years ago, before it got swamped by twee, middle class posters who seem to be obsessed with dog crap, dogs, scary looking people and other garbage that has turned me off from reading it very much.

As I recall it was a bunch of (in your eyes) twee middle class posters complaining about dogs that got you started posting on here in the first place?

then v now - it's uncanny!

If the forum is worse now, it isnt't because of tweeness or people of any class - it'll be because ... well that'll start another debate so I'll save it.

Gosh, how lovely, it has it all. A polite Huguenot, people trying to stay on topic, alan dale removing all his posts, Ted Max being witty AND a lounging!!

And all those lovely lost posters, the place just isn't the same without Sean McGabhann, keef and snorky is it.

*wipes tear of joy

I remember being at one of the "old" drinks, having a really good chat with someone before they asked who I was on the forum. When I explained, their smile kind of faded and their face soured. The conversation died and they made their excuses and left.....

I think that says it all.

The burning question re on-line personas (and not the "I remember when it was all fields around here" outlook of certain senior members) is why SO many have changed theirs over the years.

Is it boredom with a hastily chosen persona? A game (arising out of more boredom) where you have to guess who so-and-so is now? A rebirth after a banning? The desire to disassociate oneself with previouly held views? Multiple personalities?

I ask because the new personas of those who have changed are (it would seem) quickly and easily recognised/known by their contemporaries; indeed at the forum drinks I went to a year or so ago, among the things pointed out to me was "That's so-and-so, he used to be whtshisname, and that's thingy who used to go by the name of thingamajig" and so on.

I ask merely for information. And because it's Friday. And I'm really borrrrrrred.

    • It's the "due to commercial reasons" line again that is vexing. Last year it seemed, although there was a similar level of objection, that the reasons were commercial - Gala didn't appear entirely prepared to run 3 more events, or more likely didn't have sufficient interest from other promoters / organisers who could 'sub-let' the site as with Brockwell Park (I believe?). This year they appeared more organised, had another year to plan & prepare, to the extent they actually had names for two of the three new events which indicated to me that they had third party promoters / organisers in place.  So yes, it does make you wonder whether the repeated level of objection, combined with the impending elections, led to the council 'advising' that maybe they shelve it again? I'm afraid I can't see the whole extension application just being a ruse to guarantee permission for the 'regular' event. Gala are a commercial venture with ambition - every festival's business plan is to expand, expand, expand, year on year on year. Gala won't give up until they have taken over the whole park for a Summer of Raves, and the mysterious owners are on their yachts counting their ££££
    • Thanks for that. Maybe forthcoming elections have stymied the 7 day request? If Labour get back in, do we think GALA will try with greater success in 2027?
    • Better late than never, same obscure reason as previously for not going ahead with the extended plan... "Due to commercial reasons, the event organisers have withdrawn their application to hold a 7- day event over two weekends. The application has been revised to request the use of Peckham Rye Park to hold a 4-day event over one bank holiday weekend with the following schedule: • Onsite: Monday 11 May 2026 • GALA: Friday 22 – Sunday 24 May • On the Rye Festival: BH Monday 25 May • Off-site Sunday 31 May 2026 This is the same event programme that was delivered in 2025."  GALA 2026 consultation findings report 1519.pdf
