jacks09
Hi,I am in serious danger of losing man points for this but I need help changing a tyre! One of the nuts is an anti theft nut and has worn meaning I can't get the purchase needed to loosen it. Does anyone have an air gun?? Or ideas to help me?It's on Overhill road and anyone could help me I would be eternally grateful and generous with a nice bottle of wine Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27093-assistance-needed/ Share on other sites
Huguenot
No man points lost for that - it's an absolute bastard to sort that yourself.Must be a pro out there somewhere? Penguin68
Anti-theft nuts normally have a special fitting (socket) which fits into the nut - so that a normal socket part won't work - they are designed to 'slip' with a normal socket - are you using that? If you are, and its still slipping then it may well be a garage (or indeed an AA or RAC etc.) job. There are mobile tire fitters that might be able to help you as well.I am not sure a simple air gun would do the trick - it makes life easy, but if the fitment is slipping it still will with the air gun.Have you tried WD40 to loosen it? Sticking nuts can be shifted somtimes with WD40 and a club hammer, lightly used, to 'break' any rust adhesion. If you can remove it, do you have a torque-wrench to tighten? - if you don't, you should get any changed wheel checked over by a garage etc. when you can. jacks09
I have the security bit but it slips when using a wrench I think an air gun where I could apply constant pressure would work.... Peckhamgatecrasher
Bleedin' obvious, but are you loosening it with the wheel on the ground, not jacked up, as it gives you more leverage? ruffers
If it was on Wheeler Dealers I'm pretty sure Edd would be applying some heat. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27093-assistance-needed/#findComment-597017 Share on other sites

polla2256
Try shocking the nut ie hit it with a hammer. Is it a left handed thread. Yes you loose man points for this. woodrot
be careful - often the anti theft nuts have brazed on heads that shear off very easily if you twat them too hard, leaving you with a stump & no way to get it out - it will cost you 60-100 quid to get a pro around to drill into the bolt and then extract itIf you are using the security key nut and its slipping, be careful, as it will shear if not exactly hard straight into the female sideor you could take it down to kwik fit to sort out - if it breaks, then you can blame them.... Lowlander
Do try the WD40 trick, apply liberally, leave for a few hours, it might just work. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27093-assistance-needed/#findComment-597355 Share on other sites
