It's all about the base...

Where have all the Xmas tree bases gone? Most trees I see in the street (often stood up but sometimes prone and trip-friendly) have not got the round bases. Does Southwark stipulate removal pre mulching?

They are good when dried for firepits etc.

It's the wood ones I mean. Nary a one but a fair few trees lying horizontally across teh footpaths, which I removed, of course! If you (meaning "a person in general, not a contributor to this thread" leave a tree like that you could be causing a blind person a nasty injury or preventing people with mobility problems from getting about.

They do say to leave it by the brown bin for collection as well without the need to book a collection.

This page on the website is more or less a repetition of what they say every year, I don?t think they?ve ever said just leave it out on the street! But we do and they get collected. The excellent guys in the truck with the cage are on the look out. Mine was gone in half an hour which was of course left in such a way so as not to cause an obstruction.

Its a shame they do not burn very easily- with all the pubs etc closed, it wouldnt be the worst idea in the world, for social activity, to collect lots of them up and have a big bonfire in the garden, inviting some friends round for food and drinks etc. You have to make your own fun in lockdown!

I gave up on Christmas Trees a few years back - there are other decorations and I was fed up with dumping of trees on 5th January.

Also no children (I know children love trees)

When I was young we had an artificial one in the attic all year - sounds ancient (and filthy) now.

    • Another recommendation for Sebastian at Bastek. He completely redid our family bathroom and transformed it into such a beautiful space. He is methodical in his work, really pays attention to detail and gives clear, considered advice.  As well as fitting the new bathroom suite so carefully, he did a fabulous job with the tiling, painting and finishes. An added bonus was the great communication and tidiness! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and hope to involve him in future projects. He's on 07947 751333 and is really responsive on WhatsApp.
    • thanks! i was thinking how to create the spiked things myself as have seen some online but expensive once you calculate how much you need!
    • Suggest you get come Correx eg from an old estate agents sign and cut it into 50mm wide strips. Then get some carpet tacks (15mm long)  Push the carpet tacks into and through the Correx at 25mm intervals so that the sharp ends stick upwards. Then attach the strip to the top of your fence where it is lowest. It  doesnt injure them. It just makes it uncomfortable for them and they soon learn.
    • At sue , do you think the people of southwark or even the UK on their own can solve all of the environmental problems in the world on our own ? And putting garden waste into a brown bin is going to solve the environmental  problems of the world ? I do my bit for the environment by doing my recycling and driving a electric van , southwark council are causing more pollution by having LTNs and causing the traffic jams and vehicles to idle, believe me iam all for the environment but I'm afraid what happens to the earth in 200 , 500 or one thousand years from now is not my concern , I need to makesure that I can keep myself and my family alive now the same as many other people who are finding it difficult to pay for food and pay their Bills,  so I'm afraid I will be putting my garden waste into MY green bin which I pay for via my council tax and save my £80 which would help pay for my electric of gas or food ..  Also heard that council may only be collecting green and blue bins once a month,  not confirmed but just hear say at the moment ...
