Gala setting up on Peckham Rye

It wasn?t just young people enjoying themselves. Myself and my wife, both well into our 50s enjoyed both days of the festival and met 4 similar age friends inside from the local area. The festival is very well run, has fantastic artists and some of the friendliest crowds I?ve seen at similar events.

I realise peoples? experience of noise is subjective, but I can honestly say I could barely hear the festival until I was on top of it, and could hear nothing from where I live on Fellbrigg, however acoustics and wind direction can do funny things and affect some areas more than others. Compared to the constant noise from loft and kitchen extensions building work I?d say this is relatively minor and time limited.

The volume inside is relatively low compared to similar events I?ve been to, personally I?d have preferred it louder, but I understand the limitations of running an event at this kind of site. There was certainly no stomach rumbling trouser flapping bass. On balance if it brings revenue into the council, promotes the area and allows thousands of people to enjoy a great weekend then we should support events like this.

And that is the selfish response that typifies the average festival goer it seems. Not against the event for the last time, but think the location is too close to people's houses, which it definitely is.

No it finished at 10.30 and those with children had a terrible weekend. This is not the same as having work done on the home at all. Noise around that type of work has to finish by 7 by law. Most workmen finish by 4.30 in reality. Where I do agree is in the event being well organised. No other issues with it. The noise wasn't at a constant level either. Live bands and MCs seemed to suddenly get loud and I suspect there was some riding of the volumes. But the key thing here is that the licence granted in 2018 was for a TWO day event once a year until end of 2021. Somewhere, the council decided to change that licence, and did so without consultation. That is what I personally will be challenging with the local councillors.

Pretty polarised, but I am in the Pilton camp (village next to Glastonbury) where most endure the festival seeing the bigger benefits. Although they are bribed with free day tickets, perhaps the Gala should have done similar.

Same can be said about the nuisance of those letting of fireworks in the early hours at every opportunity (well at least we didn't have this for Euro 2020..) and the occasional house party. Annoying but you quickly forget and move on.

You of course realise that RCH, who has complained as per her post above, was a local councillor who possibly still has a lot of influence in council chambers.

Malumbu, good point on Glastonbury - I am hoping Gala take the same approach and embrace it as the family Eavis sdo who pretty much carpet bomb anyone in Somerset (never mind just Pilton) with the opportunity for a ticket!

I didn't read the complaint as 'moaning about' and being 'against other people enjoying themselves', it is about the negative impact noise has had on the other poster...and has been clearly qualified as keeping young children awake and interfering with the other poster's ability to work. These are reasonable concerns. Sorry if you really cannot see that.

Anyway, it has been reported by a number of people and perhaps something can be sorted for next year. Perhaps the festival or council could fund noise cancelling headphones for those who request them. Earplugs alone are not that effective.

LOL - I'm actually a considerate neighbor and noise doesn't really bother me too much. I think a few people around my way are stuck in flats they would normally have moved on from due to cladding issues etc and want a quieter area now they're older.

Hadn't realised - I hope a few took them up on this. Wonder what the demographic was - under 35s or older. Impressed that you had to be double jabbed, take a test or show proof that you have had Covid in the past.

I bought resident tickets for ?20 (usually ?70+). No point arguing on here, let the moaners moan. If it wasnt this festival, it would be something else to moan about this weekend then onto the next thing next week. I love living in this area but the fun prevention officers that occupy this forum make me question it sometimes

Would it? I've been following this thread and really wonder where's people's empathy for others has gone. 'Moaning' and struggling with the noise impact are two very different things. It's evident from this year and others that the sound from Gala carries in strange ways; also that people's personal noise tolerances also vary for many reasons.

And they are limited to just 400 out of the 17k sold. Hardly generous. But again, the real issue here is that a two day festival was allowed a third day, a day that is a working day for most. The council changed the existing licence to allow that with no regard for or consultation with local residents seemingly.

Quite. I would love to see where I show a track record of moaning about stuff every weekend. The truth is I don't. I expect there to be one day events and house parties etc, at various times of the year. So I really fail to understand how anyone can not see the difference between that, and 30 hours of very loud music across three consecutive days, one of which is a working weekday for most who work. There was no warning of an extra day, none whatsoever.

Unfortunately there seems to have been a plethora of people registering for the forum in the last couple of weeks who seem to be here just to antagonise and be unpleasant. Strangely, a lot of them seem to have animal based names!

On the residents tickets it was a bit different this year. Gala made 25% of the Friday tickets available to residents for ?20 + booking fee. You had to send proof of address to an email. See here - https://thisisgala.co.uk/information/

malumbu, put yourself on their mailing list and you will get notified when tickets go on sale.

I had tickets held over from last year that were for the main festival on Sat - when they made a much smaller number of residents tickets available but they were for the "main" event.

I can also see both sides of the argument re noise - it didn't seem particularly loud nearby and I think Gala had done a lot to try and manage the issue, but sounds travels in mysterious ways. The thump of the bass from the Horniman event was much louder for us than the Gala event. But I very much take the point about Friday being a working day and more disruptive for residents.
