Without wanting to brag, we?re getting loads of small and larger birds visiting our feeding stations:

Great, blue, coal and long-tailed tits

Goldfinches

Sparrows

Robins

Greater spotted woodpecker

Starlings

Jay

Magpies

Parakeets

Wrens

We?ve got high quality suet (not balls), peanuts and niger seeds in feeders on a very tall pole positioned next to tall shrubs that the small birds use on approach. We also have a wooden bird house feeder for the large birds that we put suet in.

We?re in The Gardens, btw.

Hope that helps!

Put a photo of your feeders up. You've missed out wood pigeons, they even try to get at the feeders and the most ridiculous sight was on trying to eat the niger seeds that had fallen onto the feeder tray. We use both suet balls and pellets, at times the balls are popular. I've noticed that the Aldi suet balls less popular than the ones I got on line. Never had any luck with seeds and nuts. Dried meal worms are eaten but pricey.

But don't you have squirrels trying to get at stuff? I scatter pellets from time to time for the ground feeders, but the rats with fluffy tales eat the pellets.

Here you go. Yes, we have squirrels trying to get in on the action. We can?t stop them from going in the house, but we slather the feeder pole with Vaseline then sit back and watch them slide down repeatedly 😀

Ta everso. Nice that you are encouraging wildlife. I used car grease on my pole (ho ho) but for some reason upside down football cones have also put them off. Parakeets come close but yet to invade. Genuinely went through 5 x more feed in 2019 so something has affected the birds - hopefully that there is more food generally available.

Any chance of a video of the sliding squirrels?

:))

Oh poor squirrel! He (or she) deserves a bit of bird food, for persistence!

    • Another shout out for Milk & More - their app allows you to alter the order, add or subtract to it and also to schedule holiday stops without having to leave messages in bottle - so more secure. You do have to set up a direct debit with them, but I haven't had any problems with that myself. I have had one or two missed or late deliveries in several years, but not really a problem - only very occasional and caused mainly by delivery-person illness. And very much feels like an old-fashioned milk delivery. They do special seasonal offers as well. More expensive than the cheapest of the super market milk prices, but for that its at your door, fresh and no bother.
    • Enjoying the nostalgia and memories.  As with others, we get ours through Milk and More (is part of big co, so there is that against it, but it's hardly a secret/niche thing) - returnable glass bottles of milk, orange juice, yoghurt, and much more besides (as per the name). And yes it comes in the middle of the night in an electric vehicle. So can still get out nostalgia fix, doubled when the Riverford chap comes too.
    • This sounds like what goes on at Tessa Jowell GP surgery as well as others.   If you can flag yourself up as a ‘vulnerable’ patient or one that can’t use Apps for whatever reason etc then you can usually make appts by phone. They would have to make allowances. Quote the Equality Act 2010,  reasonable adjustments section.
    • Its part of a change all Doctor surgery's are undergoing.  The goverment want to stop the 8am scramble for an appointment, and its not just restricted to the Gardens. Sadly, it does impact some who are not digitally savy.
