Is it my imagination or has the 'Size of womens minges' thread gone? Is this political correctness gone mad? Why are discussions about dicks allowed, nay encouraged but as soon as the Flaps make an appearance as a topic of debate than its swiftly removed. I know that as a riposte to the tackle issue it was a pretty predictable response but please Administrator please dont draw the beef curtains on this one...

annaj, I'm always surprised when people don't know what a berk is, and also by the way that the word is used quite liberally, usually by people who's sensibilities would be offended by the very word itself.

Actually the word 'Berk' derives from the name of the 15th century Mayor of Falmouth who was called Solomon Burke. A famously stupid individual who mustered a flotilla of fishing boats and attempted to mount an assault on The Spanish Mainland after The Earl of Salamanca insulted his honour by pointing out that the Mayors wife smelled of wee and cheese(A point roundly agreed upon by all present). As you can imagine a fleet of 24 trawlers was never going to be much of a match for the Armada at Spains disposal and all were killed save Burke who was savagely humiliated by being saddled up and used to great affect as the tawdry show pony of the vengeful earl. Sad, but funny.

    • Who was Diana Rayworth, when 'resting from acting'. Her successful career was very sadly cut short following a devastating accident.
    • thanks Jenijenjen and all - yes, i remember walking or taking the bus from the elephant (where i was working) to Camberwell to get there.  I think Tim - who's still at Franklin's -  was there in those days, and the woman who ran the cafe!  Other food places that i remember fondly are the ones in Neal's Yard (with the Hunkin sculpture that you could put a coin in ) and the basement lunch place at the Tottenham Court Road junction with Hanway Street...
    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
