College Ward Cllrs Helen Hayes and Andy Simmons are very aware of this. Thames Water have not been very forthcoming over when the water supply is likely to be restored. Helen has notified Council Officers about the situation, particularly as vulnerable, elderly and disabled residents may have difficulty in accessing the bottled water and standpipe.

Local Authorities have a set procedure to respond to level 3 and level 4 warm weather alerts. It would be worth trying to contact Sarah McClinton - Southwark Social Services as she can issue instructions to social workers to look up vulnerable adults in the area who may need additional help in accessing water and water supplies. Failing her - try Ray Boyce.

I've only just picked this up after spending the night in hospital.

I'll try and find out when it will be repaired what TW are doing to tell affected people.


I've asked that the next Dulwich Community Council, which sadly isnt until September, thaT thames Water be invited to explain what is going on generally and why they've failed to responded properly to this and other issues.

Went out at 0945 and it was slightly bubbling. Came back at 1530 and it was much worse and no sign of workmen. They don't need permission to dig for this type of work so they just deal with the immediate problem- then another leak may appear so they dig again etc. so I have been reliably informed

It's always in pretty much the same spot there. Was quite substantial when I came back on the school run. Can drivers please be aware of the water too. So many purposely (yes, purposely) drive through it causing massive splashes when people are walking out of LL estate. This is illegal and totally uncalled for, there is plenty of space in the road there to not hit the surface water.

I got splashed at the bus stop opposite Overhill Road on Thursday thanks to a speeding car. It's also formed a large puddle on LL outside the estate which normally happens after heavy rainfall with rain and a stream of water going into a drain outside Byron Court.

Were the blokes standing round actual workmen or just passers by?


I walked past there 4 times on saturday, the first about 10:15am, saw a red van of Clancy Docwra parked there. Driver having a nap inside. Walked past again about 11:45, driver awake now, but still sitting inside his car.


Walked past again around 15:30, the van was now parked facing the opposite direction, driver inside.I got the impression he probably went for lunch and came back to sit in his van possibly charging the council per hour he is sat there.


Temporary lights causing all manor of traffic turned on yesterday (monday) but so far I havent seen any actual work being done, considering the road started leaking around wednesday/thursday last week, you wonder what they are doing.

Well, definitely not passers-by (all in overalls, boots, high-vis jackets etc) but also not doing any actual work when I went past. Sounds from what Penguin38 says that they got going a bit later in the evening. It was more the comical shaking of heads that was going on - like a bad sitcom.

According to Thames' website, the problem has now disappeared. There's a report of a leak on Overhill, and they're sending a technician.


According to public.londonworks.gov.uk, there's a "Main Clamp 6 to 12" Cway in Carriageway" which'll be going on till Friday. Presumably that's what the current round of single-lane action is about. Potentially more interesting is the expedition to "Investigate and repair leak on 42" main" up Fireman's Alley, which is scheduled to go on till the Friday after, thrillingly close to the telephone exchange.


Given all these pipes were tediously upgraded well within living memory, expressly to reduce leaks and at our considerable expense, I have asked Thames the relevant question. I'm sure a helpfully constructive reply is on its way.

At last nights Dulwich Community Council we had three Thames Water officials talking about the previous Underhill/Lordship Lane burst pipe and Herne Hill.


They explained that 12 different mains pipes are in the vacinity of Underhill/Lordship Lane junction. That the burst earlier this year was of a 4" mains. But due to the very hilly nature when they reduced the pressure to keep water available for residents but reduce the damage of the gushing water that water unhill and top floor flats went of.


This latest burst is apparently a 6" mains.


They exlained that the recent (last 12 months) has seen a doubling in burst main with the cold winter, hot summer, LOTS of rain. This combination means lots of earth movement and pipes bursting.

      I am keeping my fingers crossed the next few days are not so loud. I honestly think it is the private, back garden displays that are most problematic as, in general, there is no way of knowing when and where they might happen. For those letting off a few bangers in the garden I get it is tempting to think what's the harm in a few minutes of 'fun', but it is the absolute randomness of sudden bangs that can do irreparable damage to people and animals. With organised events that are well advertised there is some forewarning at least, and the hope is that organisers of such events can be persuaded to adopt and make a virtue of using only low noise displays in future.

      There was an excellent discussion on Newscast last night between the BBC Political Editor, the director of the IFS and the director of More In Common - all highly intelligent people with no party political agenda and far more across their briefs than any minister I've seen in years. The consensus was that Labour are so unpopular and untrusted by the electorate already, as are the Conservatives, that breaking the manifesto pledge on income tax wouldn't drive their approval ratings any lower, so they should, and I quote, 'Roll The Dice', hope for the best and see where we are in a couple of years time. As a strategy, i don't know whether I find that quite worrying or just an honest appraisal of what most governments actually do in practice.

      They are a third of the way through their term Earl. It's no good blaming other people anymore. They only have three years left to fix what is now their own mess. And its not just lies in the manifesto. There were lies at the last budget too, when they said that was it, they weren't coming back for more tax and more borrowing. They'd already blamed the increase in NIC taxes on what they claimed was a thorough investigation. They either knew everything then or they lied about that too .   They need to stop lying and start behaving. If they don't the next government won't be theirs, it will be led by Nigel Farage.  They have to turn it round rapidly. Blaming other people, telling lies and breaking promises isn't going to cut it any more.
