Asset
d'you think I need to run it again in safe mode or do I need to uninstall and reinstall the program in safe mode?Shall I uninstall the a-squared program and install AVG instead?I've rebooted since quarantining, text still lagging behind my typing. It's infuriating. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-117542 Share on other sites
appers
my suggestion would be to uninstall a-squared and try the new avg (don't forget to install the virus updates after installing the main program...).i would try doing all of this in safe mode, and the scan too. if it complains that it can't be run in safe mode then you'll have to boot normally and run from there.keep us posted! yourmomma
you probably have to switch the wireless device on. Normally there's a switch or a combination of function and f4 or something. MelbourneGr
Winword? How old is your PC???I don't usually wait around when my PC freezes up. It's a straight back up onto dvd of anything important then a clean format.I usually experience the problems you described when my virus scanner does an auto-scan from boot-up. lozzyloz
Yes.But back up important data first and then re-install software. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-117659 Share on other sites

MelbourneGr
If you have the system restore utility (usually under accessories --> system tools) you can revert back to how your PC was at a certain point in time. You would still have to back up anything important created after the system restore point.System restore points are usually created after modifying the system like installing new software. If you have installed anything recently, that could be causing the slowdown. Asset
As an added bonus, I've just tried to plug in a memory stick and not one of my four USB ports is working, what the fuck has happened. It's obviously connected. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-117769 Share on other sites
Keef
Are you getting adverts popping up, even when you haven't opened explorer? I got AdAware Away, which cost ?20 odd quid, but sorted everything for me. Asset
No adverts.BTW I really, really can't be bothered doing all as described above. Especially now as my USB ports aren't working and I can't get an external hard drive on the go.If someone wants to do it for me I'll give them lunch and a bottle of wine.EDIT: or money Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-117872 Share on other sites
KalamityKel
To be fair Laptops aren't designed to last forever. 2yrs is good going if you use it a lot. I know that's not much help but I sense the end of it's life is soon approaching.I had my laptop for prob around 4yrs... after 2 yrs things started to fail - the speakers, internal modem, ports for phone lines, the fan wouldnt function properly causing it to overheat and shut down after around 20mins usage, battery wouldnt last and the power cable would over heat too... the final being the screen dying :( I was heart broken! MelbourneGr
My Laptop is approaching its 3rd year in August ::oIt's true, Laptops are so flimsy these days - especially those apple paper thin ones. they show it sliding so neatly into the A4 envelope but what they don't show is when that envelope is dropped from a small distance and the dust that comes out after.Tip: avoid using laptop keyboard, mouse and screen whenever possible. ed_pete
Asset - have you tried CCleaner - it helps get rid of all the crap that accumulates the longer you use your PC. IMHO one of the frequent causes of slowness is the stuff that gets started automatically and runs in the background and this app helps you sort that out. Furthermore you could try a defrag - either the Windows one or it would seem that the company behind CCleaner have brought out their own. Asset
I installed yesterday a programme called registry booster 2 which I think is the same sort of thing as CCleaner. It had not made much difference to be honest even though it maintained I had over 1000 problems to be fixed.I've have just now uninstalled one of the programmes that ran in the background, dell network assistant, and I'm waiting to see if that makes any diff. Thanks for all your advice chaps. mockney piers
Sounds kind of virusey to me if you're missing your usb ports then it sounds like some of you're drivers have been disabled. I had a similar thing from a virus that propogated itself on the boot sectors of floppies (yes, it was a long time ago). But if you've not found one I'm not sure what to do, it could be an overzealous virus blocker or firewall, have you tried switching both off?If it's anything like my old spectrum days, talk to it soothingly, cajoole it, and if all else fails, pull out its rubber keys painfully and hurl it against a wall. Time for a new one anyway!! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-118118 Share on other sites
Shu.Kurimu.Sensei
I thought the best remedy for a Speccy that was acting up was to put a cold carton of milk on top, allowing you to return to flying around in Mercenary or exploring the weird worlds of Wally Week ^^ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3713-bloody-dell/page/2/#findComment-118172 Share on other sites
