my suggestion would be to uninstall a-squared and try the new avg (don't forget to install the virus updates after installing the main program...).

i would try doing all of this in safe mode, and the scan too. if it complains that it can't be run in safe mode then you'll have to boot normally and run from there.

keep us posted!

If you have the system restore utility (usually under accessories --> system tools) you can revert back to how your PC was at a certain point in time. You would still have to back up anything important created after the system restore point.

System restore points are usually created after modifying the system like installing new software. If you have installed anything recently, that could be causing the slowdown.

To be fair Laptops aren't designed to last forever. 2yrs is good going if you use it a lot. I know that's not much help but I sense the end of it's life is soon approaching.

I had my laptop for prob around 4yrs... after 2 yrs things started to fail - the speakers, internal modem, ports for phone lines, the fan wouldnt function properly causing it to overheat and shut down after around 20mins usage, battery wouldnt last and the power cable would over heat too... the final being the screen dying :( I was heart broken!

My Laptop is approaching its 3rd year in August ::o

It's true, Laptops are so flimsy these days - especially those apple paper thin ones. they show it sliding so neatly into the A4 envelope but what they don't show is when that envelope is dropped from a small distance and the dust that comes out after.

Tip: avoid using laptop keyboard, mouse and screen whenever possible.

Asset - have you tried CCleaner - it helps get rid of all the crap that accumulates the longer you use your PC. IMHO one of the frequent causes of slowness is the stuff that gets started automatically and runs in the background and this app helps you sort that out. Furthermore you could try a defrag - either the Windows one or it would seem that the company behind CCleaner have brought out their own.

I installed yesterday a programme called registry booster 2 which I think is the same sort of thing as CCleaner. It had not made much difference to be honest even though it maintained I had over 1000 problems to be fixed.

I've have just now uninstalled one of the programmes that ran in the background, dell network assistant, and I'm waiting to see if that makes any diff.

Thanks for all your advice chaps.

Sounds kind of virusey to me if you're missing your usb ports then it sounds like some of you're drivers have been disabled. I had a similar thing from a virus that propogated itself on the boot sectors of floppies (yes, it was a long time ago).

But if you've not found one I'm not sure what to do, it could be an overzealous virus blocker or firewall, have you tried switching both off?

If it's anything like my old spectrum days, talk to it soothingly, cajoole it, and if all else fails, pull out its rubber keys painfully and hurl it against a wall. Time for a new one anyway!!

    • Dear families,   My name is Eleanor. I’ve worked in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for the past eight years, and I’m about to begin an Infant Observation course in preparation for psychotherapy training. I’m looking for a baby to observe as part of this training.   The observation involves me visiting a baby and their parent for one hour a week over two years, with the aim of deepening my understanding of early emotional and developmental processes. Taking part is a generous contribution to the training of future child psychotherapists — ultimately supporting the mental health of children and families.   Both of my own children were observed as babies, which I found to be a really positive experience. Having an observer gently witness my babies’ development helped me notice their weekly changes in a new way, and I came to appreciate the calm, consistent presence of a trained observer. I was sad when the observations ended!   If you — or someone you know — is expecting a baby due before the end of February*, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me at +44 7977 910018 or [email protected].   Best wishes, Eleanor
    • I rarely iron, so my massive ironing board is just taking up unnecessary space. Does anyone have one of those little ones that you can use on an ordinary table?
    • It's happened twice today, I've never had this happen before! Here's the second one. All I did was try to agree with a post in the lounge!
    • Now I'm having my hand slapped by some forum bot 😮 All I did was try to add a laughing emoji to ianr's post. This is obviously a message from the universe to tell me to get off my phone and get back to working my way through my very lengthy to do list 🤣 ETA: And it's just happened again when I tried to agree with a post in the lounge. OK universe, I give in. Back to the hideous task list.
