I don't live in East Dulwich (I wish!) but I don't live too far away. Just at the bottom of Stanstead Road which is borderline Forest Hill, as my flat is situated in SE6 just two streets down from SE23. Our little peninsular has been gentrified and given the name of Perry Vale North. I kid you not, it's got a sign up at each end of the road to let us all know this is where we are. Probably just a way of compensating us for not be considered as Forest Hill.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone could recommend any caf?s, pubs, bars (away from Lordship Lane) in East Dulwich where it doesn't get too busy on a Saturday morning / afternon where I can sit in a corner, minding my own business so I can write. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Of course I'd go exploring myself but working full time and studying part time doesn't leave much time for exploration. Thank you!

I have a favourite perch in The Bishop for that time-frame on Saturdays. Trialing a 6 x 6 method as I advance in years. 6 pints by 6pm. System works well (well once), but has flexibilty to push out to 7 x 7 and 8 x 8 , after which my sunday is ruined anyway!

*ETA: The 6 x 6 method is intended to have me back home by 6pm.

Does that mean you have to down the last pint? Not sure you could get much writing done that way though.

I'm more of an advocate of the 5 x 5 method.

#five-a-day

Fair point SJ. I'd consider The Montpellier on Choumert, SE15. Great pub, won't be too busy and has nice seating in corners to write, watch and 6 x 6. Also you can sit on the other side of the bar, out the way and still look on without being jostled, disturbed. In fact I've just popped in, and if I was a writer, chapter 1 would start here.
We tend to go just up the road to Canvas and cream in forest hill, I know it's not ED, But you can find a quiet corner and the staff are rather pleasant, It has a nice relaxed feel too. On a saturday in ED it's very hard to find a place not rammed tbh, unless it's August and everyones away :)
Thanks all. I had considered Canvas & Cream but when I passed there last Saturday afternoon, it was heaving with people. I guess in the autumn months people tend to opt for inside seating rather than al fresco so it would make sense why so many places are rammed at the moment. Maybe if I go now I might be lucky and beat the lunchtime rush, failing that, I'll go on to the The Montpelier on Chaumert Road as that sounds perfect. I doubt I wiill give the 6 x 6 method a go seeing as I'm not really into pints but I like your style. I'd probably spend more time in the loo than getting anything written since beer goes right through me. More of a Sauvignon Blanc girl myself and having six of those would only lead me into other activies one shouldn't be doing, as well as, plenty of visits to the loo.

I am glad that I don't live in East Dulwich. It is like the Countryside, OK to visit, but not to live in.

I did live in Catford briefly, and very close to the Forest Hill borders. There is no need to go out of that area when you have the best pub in SE London, the Blythe Hill Tavern, and one not far off the Catford Bridge Tavern (whops too late, its been closed). Blythe Hill is a lovely view/park, and loads more green space. And the Waterlink way path/cycle path. Which ends up at Lower Syenham so you can visit the person who asked about moving to Syd/Penge.

And Wickes.

If I am desparate I will use the Rose (if the beer was OK I'd use it more frequently). Otherwise I don't see any point in drinking in East Dulwich now the Crystal Palace Tavern has gone.

Oh and if you think I am trolling I can almost spit into East Dulwich from where I live, and whatever I think of some of you, I am allowed to post my views unlike another supposed community website.

    • It has come to this author’s attention that the world of 4+ admissions — that most enigmatic of educational rites — continues to bewilder even the most composed of parents. Fear not. For in a former life, I was not merely a humble observer, but a seasoned educator of over twenty years, and Head of Pre-Prep for a distinguished dozen. Now, with quill exchanged for touchscreen, I have taken to that most modern of salons — Instagram — to dispense guidance, answer frequently whispered questions, and illuminate the shadowy corners of school selection with clarity and calm. Each post bears my signature twist: a blend of insight, levity, and the occasional raised eyebrow. Should you find yourself adrift in the sea of admissions, I suggest you peruse my latest dispatch. • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
    • So dangerous!    Can you be more specific about the road this was in and when you report it?  Maybe there’s some CCTV footage available
