Just to stick up for Sydenham, I love it, there is a mix of people, and no more chavs on the high street that one sees on Lordship Lane. Penge East is 5-10 minute walk from Sydenham High Street, from where you can get on Victoria Line trains. Agree night life is rubbish, but I love living in upper Sydenham!

Bert and Ethel, Stan and Ada, need I go on.......................how pretentious for this area too.

What's happened to all the proper names like Madonna, Peaches, Mooslingtonia, etc.

Because, ultimately, I'd rather be run over by a pushchair than mugged for my wallet at knifepoint.

I'm new to this forum but I've gotta say some people seem very quick to take offense and over react. FFS, all I said was there was a bit of 'nappy valley' thing going on! It's not like I hate kids or anything like that....ohhhh, f*ck it, whatever....

"Yeah I had noticed that ED seems to have something of a 'nappy valley' thing going on. Kids everywhere, mostly with really stupid pretentious names. Never mind though, gotta take the rough with the smooth and all that..."

don't look a kid fan to me.....still if you're scared of the cooler areas you sound quite suited to our suburban oasis

No I'm not particularly keen on them but just because there are more kids about is hardly a reason to avoid living in an area.

I've paid my dues when it comes to living in dodgy areas. In my experience 'dodgy' definitely doesn't equate to 'cool', in fact it's the more middle class areas like ED that are considered cool by most people. I've done 2 years in South Tottenham, 4 years in Wood Green, 1 year in Vauxhall and 18 months in Walworth, that's some pretty rough areas and I wouldn't consider any of them to be 'cool'. I'm not 'scared' as such I've just had enough of the ghetto to last me a lifetime and want somewhere a bit more relaxed.

I think it's Tilt Estates. If you scroll back through this thread there is a web site somebody mentioned where you can get email alerts when a property in your preferred area comes up.

We've been here since May and can recommend it! And yes we do have two young kids and so do most of our neghbours.

I think most of the rental propeties are through Burnet Ware and Graves, as it is just around the corner on the corner of Peckham Rye and ED Road. I had a look at one through them a couple of years ago. Love the square, but it was too small for me.

Tilt's sold their business for a tidy sum, which was discussed on the forum some time ago.

    • Thank you, Pugwash. That's really useful information. Do you know who was responsible for the locks and keys, or which council department? Could you PM me if you don't want to put someone's personal details on here?  It may save me having to speak to Monica. Thanks.
    • Does anybody know why? Trees aren't cut down for no reason. There must have been something wrong with it (I hope that was the reason). A child was recently killed and another one injured when a tree fell in a park (not in this area). It isn't always obvious from the outside when a tree is diseased or whatever, and I imagine the council would give safety considerations priority when deciding what to do, if there was any doubt at all.
    • It looks like they have cut it down completely now 😭
    • Different people will be  involved within Thames Water. The people dealing with the leaks aren't the people encouraging less water usage. How many people have reported the Barry Road leak? By what channels? What response have they had? When we had a leak in our road which meant we had no water, several people reported it, there was good communication with TW, they explained why they couldn't come out immediately (other urgent jobs elsewhere in the area) , kept  in touch with us and fixed the leak within a reasonable timescale (hours). Someone from TW also contacted me later to make sure my water was back. But does Thames Water know about it? They aren't psychic (I presume). If nobody reports it, I also presume they won't even know the leaks are  there, unless they have some kind of central monitoring system which tells them when there are leaks in the system. To make it clear, I am not defending Thames Water as a company, which I think should never have been privatised.  But there are some things they can't be blamed for (old and disintegrating water pipe system in London) and some they can (possibly, lack of sufficient staff to deal with leaks, maybe due to trying to save money to give their shareholders more. But this is just surmise on my part - I know nothing about Thames Water).
