what is beef rendang. is it thai, indonesian or what. dunno, but I suddenly fancy it

Rendang is Malay, beef cooked for a couple of hours in a mix of coconut, lemon grass, galangal and spices. It should be fairly dry when finished.

Found Mangosteen in Norwood. Looks quite nice. Also going for the Bangkok spicy wings. Yum.

The Chinese shop in Peckham stocks a brand of curry paste called Brahim which is imported from Malaysia, and includes a very good rendang paste. The rendang is also very good at Bunga Raya in Thornton Heath. Haven't tried Mangosteen - let us know if it's good.

Mangosteens menu is interesting if you fancy something different. We had a few starters which were nice. The rendang however, was a bit disappointing. Lacked flavour or punch. We will try some other things from there on the future though as it's a bit of a break from the norm.

There is a new website called Cookisto and I noticed someone in the Peckham area makes beef rendang.It's an idea that started in Athens and recently launched here,people make various home cooked dishes and sell to people.I was thinking about signing up as I love making a massive pot of rendang.It brings back wonderful memories of family trips to Penang!

I agree with yeknomyeknom that the beef rendang in Mangosteen is lacking in punch but if you ask them to make it authentic they will. They just cater for westerners tastes as lots of people complain if it is too spicy.

Silly if you ask me. Why go to a Malaysian restaurant and complain about it being too spicy? ;)

I really think that restaurants and takeaways that serve westernised versions of "ethnic" foods (i.e. almost all of them) are missing a trick. They just need to do a small menu of authentic-ish dishes, and everyone will start queueing at the door and paying double.
