Well they have been doing it for a long time...

We have some of the lowest standards in food...

Compare the above with the so called Farmers Market Franklins. (Not North Cross Rd. )It's a joke.

DulwichFox.

I wouldn't call it a market...there really isn't much there, It would be nice to see it grow and develop however right now it hardly stands up against Broadway Market,Brick Lane,Spitalfields Market,Portobello,Borough Market and Camden Lock.

Its a street with a few stalls.

Brilliant. How is a street about 100 metres long suposed to rival Borough Market and Camden Lock?

If you want a Cor Blimey fruit and veg Guvnor market go to East Street, or Rye Lane for cheap fruit n veg.

The Kurdistani chaps running the huge FnV stall at the Rye Lane end of Elm Grove have it all surely (3x cucumbers for a ?, 10x lemons for ? etc.)

NC Road is a function of the demographic, obviously. We actually have both options, so nowt to complain about really.

Hot dogs, decent pies, mexican food, vietnamese food, Hog roast - maybe not a grocer market but some good nosh and a few luxury bits and pieces. I pick up lunch there most weekends and stock up on fish cakes, bean cakes for the week at not much cost. I'd far rather we have NC market than nothing, we can go 1 or 2 miles away for other markets.

Yes it's better than nothing. It's more of a lunch stop than anything else. Could do with a few more produce stalls though. If you want a proper market, go to Deptford on a Saturday and save yourself some money. Excellent fruit and veg and more variety than you can find on Lordship Lane, superb fish at a fraction of the cost of Moxons and one of the best butchers in the country at Wellbeloveds who have been open since 1829. And you can get yourself a decent coffee to sip while wandering and a fantastic food market which is much much better than N'cross on the 1st Saturday of the month.

There really is a bunch of negative moaners on this forum.

French/Tuscan village markets - I know them well and I love village markets for fresh produce but they sell way more tat than North Cross Road. Also, the best one's are in small villages where you actually rely on the markets to load up with fruit and vege. It is not reasonable to expect on the streets of east dulwich so why bother comparing.

As for portobello road, its not a market it is a crammed procession of tourists on a saturday morning with virtually zero chance of browseing in any sort of peace. Camden is not much better.

North Cross Road is a small market that serves the local community. Fresh produce including pasta, salami and olives, cheese/fudge/meat/fish and street food is hardly tat. While not country france I am happy enough with the fruit and veg from prettys and smbs....you should try buying fruit and veg in Australia you will pay 3 times the price for half the range. Also some small businesses selling pet products, beautiful french pottery and yes some "tat" but I have never once had a hard sell and who am I to decide what someone else wants to purchase.

Another vote for Deptford Market. Great mix of long standing stool holders who've been there for generations alongside some more exotic late 20th century stalls which sell such a vast range of produce you can never be bored of the selection. All markets specialise in different things aimed at different populations, NC Market is a reflection of this as KK points out. However, it still isn't a match for something of a similar type in other gentrified parts of London.

Louisa.

I noticed that in an earlier post someone asked why the market hadn't expanded. I know a lot of market traders and they say that the pitch fees are prohibitivly expensive. If you have a quick turn over business with a good mark up on your product like The Dogfather then you can make a few quid but if you're having to fork out 50 or 60 quid before you even start it's not such a good deal.

You're right - fruit and veg is EXACTLY what's missing from NXR

Ooh, hang on

    • It was a reactionary post and inappropriate when talking about a real case and a real person who was harmed.  London streets are generally pretty safe.  Sadly violent crime happens from time to time, as it always has.
    • Do tell, CPR Dave, what the spiteful jealous stuff is - I'm intrigued.  Agree - Burnham is a top class communicator (polar opposite of Starmer) he'd do a great job of uniting the party. I still think Wes Streeting has the edge, though I'm sure he has more enemies as well.
    • This is a huge part of the problem.   Starmer is only interested in himself, not in what is best for our country.    There's a litany of stuff he's done for spiteful jealous personal reasons which has damaged the nation enormously. Burnham would be a much better leader than of the other dross left behind when Starmer goes. To inflict a worse leader (and PM) upon us for his own selfish reasons would add to the problems and be entirely in keeping with his woeful premiership so far.
    • I heard today there was a burglary in Lacon Road yesterday evening between 20.00 - 22.00,  apparently the owners were home at the time & thieves got away with electrical items along with the owners car!  Wtf!   Anyone heard anything else?
