While not getting into the whole estate agent debate which seems to have developed on this thread, had to get a tyre replaced on our car last week because of a great big screw being stuck in it. When I went into Blenheim tyres, the man told me that he has had loads of these in recently - he thought it someone/people were going round balancing them in front of the tyres so they punctured when people drove off.

Have to say though, is first time in over 6 years any had any car trouble round here.

seanm - I don't think eater81 is THAT discrimenatory - we are all targets of his/her ire

This car-tyre thing does look to be a new trend - as with all of these things it will die away again when the perps get bored. Unless they are reading this thread and enjoying the publicity of course...

the way the rolling tyre tread catches a prone screw and forces it into the rubber is the blame - it does look very suspicious, but its perfectly normal in most cases - blame the building work that ED seems to be gripped by at the minute

a sidewall puncture is more likely to be vaddalism,as it very easy & quick to do a sidewall & its utterly irrepairable, wheareas other tread damage can often be sorted by the likes of Kwikfit fo a nomianal sum - Minis tho, with their run flat tyres are particularly expensive to sort and are harder to / impossible to repair & cost about ?150 a corner.

Not cheap

Hi,

I had a puncture today! I left my car in Oakhurst Grove and then drove to the filling station at the bottom of Lordship Lane to get my card cloned. When I came out I noticed my car tyre was flat. Might it be that some local tyre repair shop needs to earn more money, as it appears obvious that it is the work of one party and the punctures are occasioned by screws only. Normally, punctures occur from a wide range of sharp instuments.

Oh well, better go to watch the big fight in Somerfields or the telly in Foxtons Ha Ha.

Aha Sean, this appears to be part of a timeless dabate beteen the Law of the Land, and Social Justice.

Or in other terms, the association between freedom and responsibility in a civilised society.

In this example, Estate Agents have the freedom in 'law' to park their mobile advertising hoardings (masquerading as business necessities) in any numbers they choose wherever legal in public roads.

However, Estate Agents also have a responsibility not to abuse this freedom to disrupt and taint the local community.

There is no doubt in any of your neighbours minds (and probably not in your own if you were honest) that Estate Agents have smugly followed the letter of the law, and stuck two fingers up at their responsibility to the community.

In your mind's eye, this puts you on the high ground. However, this is feeble-minded: the law is a vehicle for social justice created for and by the people, not an end in itself. You may quibble about your rights, but you seem to be discovering that the punishment for abusing your priveleges is a lot more abrupt and discomfiting than you'd like.

For the record, I'm no fan of this urban vigilantism, but I despise those who twist and tweak the law at the expense of society for personal gain.

Urban planning laws would refuse to populate small suburban centres with this rash of advertising because of the blight it represents. For Estate Agents to squeak through loop hole is nasty and manipulative and deserves to be treated as such.

lots & lots of empty desk space at Foxys today - maybe they should sublet ?

they should have thought a bit more about the size property they aquired rather than going for in yer face bling & soft drinks- I have never bought a property based on the availability of comfy chairs at the EA offcies- oddly enough, its the property that matters to me. Strange isnt it

i know you don't work for foxtons. if you spent as much time trying to sell my house as you seem to spend putting entries on the edf, who knows? you might have sold it by now. does your manager know how many entries you post during working hours each week? sorry you got your tyres slashed though.

    • Just to repeat the news I was given – it's not being converted into a pub. As far as I know, there's no intention of dumbing down their restaurant offering.  Although as others have pointed out, Camberwell has two pubs – The Camberwell Arms and now the Michelin-starred Kerfield Arms – with excellent food. The Palmerston used to be the only pub in ED that was of such quality, but sadly no longer IMHO.
    • The country is in a real state.  What worries me about the Greens is encouraging migration and openly offering benefits to all with visas.  Where is the money for that coming from?  As if there is spare money, as if there is growth. Where I their holistic manifesto, ensuring funds are available and this is sustainable, and regulated? Incredibly dangerous and idealistic

    • I disagree with the use of the word "sectarianism" in this context and Starmer is a total a*se to have introduced it. In my mind, sectarianism conjures up the hatred and vicious violence of The Troubles in Northern Ireland.  The divide between the Greens and Reform are a long way from that and is more reminiscent of a time when the two main parties actually stood for something and voting was more a matter of following one's political beliefs. Nobody called that sectarianism.
