I fecking hate Jamie Oliver....

Just for info - this is what I was watching at the time I posted - and here is the review appearing this morning....

"possibly the most contrived, toe-curling, faux-familiar food show the lisping chef has ever done"

I had to turn over at the point at which "Jimmy" flicked his wrist, finger pointing at the screen - you gotta do this.....referring to his home made tandoor sunken into the garden with which to make your own nan bread type stuff...which took 12 hours to heat up - Yeah I just gotta do that Jimmy.

If you didn?t know Usain Bolt was quite a good sport, you will have realised it if you had seen him being ?interviewed? by Jamie Oliver on his new vehicle, Jamie and Jimmy?s Friday Night Feast ? possibly the most contrived, toe-curling, faux-familiar food show the lisping chef has ever done. Ever. Even worse than that one where he supposedly stood in his garden.

Harsh? Watch it yourself if you don?t believe us. The premise is that Jamie and Jimmy Docherty ? Oliver?s ?old mucker from back at school? ? have a caf? at the end of Southend Pier where they make Batman-style sound effects (?Boom!? ?Bam!?) as they laddishly throw together food creations, or use angle grinders to build ?ber-man tandoori-cum-barbecue contraptions with which to cook more fancy, yet oh-so masculine food. Their hope, they said, was that we at home could ?get busy with food? over the weekend. Just what we want to do on a sub-zero mid-winter?s morning: chop up a bin in the back yard.

Last Friday?s opening episode featured Bolt in the caf? ? which, let?s not kid ourselves, is a studio with the audience acting as customers ? and he sauntered in as if he might fancy a cuppa.

As he sat at the counter it was interview time. And the questions made Jonathan Ross seem like Jeremy Paxman: ?Were you quite active as a kid??; ?You like cricket, don?t you?? Bolt could have beaten a hasty retreat at the sheer chumminess of it all, but he didn?t.

The fluffiness of the questions was perhaps to be expected: we weren?t tuning in to hear Bolt?s opinion of his Jamaica team-mates who had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The aim was to get Bolt talking about food ? and one of the first things he revealed was his take on vegetarianism. He?s not a fan. ?There are no vegetarian sprinters ? I have seen people try; it doesn?t work,? he said.

On the subject of food he does like, there was no mention of the chicken nuggets which supposedly fuelled his record-breaking Beijing Olympic 100m run. Shame, given Oliver?s evangelical stance on processed meat. Instead Bolt revealed his love for his Aunt Lily?s jerk pork (no sniggering), which was a lucky coincidence because Oliver had just happened to be on the phone to the woman in question and got the exact recipe ? complete with ?raais an? peas?, as he said in a terrible, borderline racially dubious, Jamaican accent ? which they would try and replicate in the ?caff?.

Once they got into the actual cooking, it wasn?t so bad. Bolt revealed himself to be a complete amateur in the kitchen ? he didn?t even know what kneading was ? and benefited from Oliver?s lessons in how to chop an onion. And, ever the showman, he tossed coriander leaves with a flourish and built up the anticipation to the tasting of the pork with the confidence of a TV veteran.

And when the pork was actually on the plate, he did what we suspect any athlete would do: he tucked in, wolfing down great mouthfuls of the stuff. No matter he was supposed to be helping dish the pork up to the customers, all he cared about was stuffing his face. And he did so, with a warm smile on his face ? thankfully rendering Jamie to the sidelines.

i used to despise oliver when he first appeared on tv years back, it used to drive me up the wall when i saw him reading the 'racing post' as if he had clue about horse racing. now he's dropped the mockney act i appreciate him a bit more. he seems genuinely concerned about child health and his work with ex-offenders in his '15' restaurants deserves serious praise. good on him.

edited to check the spelling of 'restaurants'

Actually although that may be correct - the Guardian review was, although also critical, not so scathing.

I was slightly surprised the Independent referring to JO's lisp - thought we didn't do that sort of thing these days.

Mick Mac has really upset Jamie Oliver..

Jamie Oliver has said that he's likely to step out of the celebrity spotlight in the coming years, in favour of concentrating on investing and mentoring.

The TV chef, who is now worth in the region of ?150 million, says he may write more books, but is less likely to be seen fronting new programmes.

?I think I am about as big as you can get right now. The question I?ve asked is does your appetite become more fulfilled because you have your name over it?? he told the Daily Mirror.

?And where is it going to stop? Well, it?s going to stop about now and be much more about other people.

If only whiny Rick Stein-y would follow his lead "Oh why can't we be more like the French/Italians/Spanish/Indians/Chinese/Them-over-there"

    • How did you get on up there?
    • My family had an appalling experience of Dulwich College and treated my young child in an extremely degrading and cruel manner. I’d like to leave this review as a warning to other parents who apply in good faith. We applied our neurodiverse child to 7+ and provided the documents from his medical team about necessary adjustments. We did this after DC spoke emphatically at multiple open days about their love and support and inclusion of neurodiverse students. Specifically Dr Griffiths saying he likes “spiky profiles”. However we were angry when after providing the documents as to the adjustments my son required DC failed to implement them, and failed to even allow him to complete 7+ assessments. When we asked them about it they were cagey and offensive. This included multiple discriminatory remarks made by Dr Griffiths which implied he was extremely ignorant about any kind of basic understanding of neurodiversity. Multiple members of staff including reception team and governors spoke in an extremely bigoted and offensive way about my child to me. We then filed a SEND4 and Dulwich College governors immediately changed their narrative about what had apparently happened during the 7+ assessment process. The discrimination continued when, by the time the SEND4 trial came round I was extremely unwell and the month before had to have an MRI to rule out possible cancer. We divulged that I was signed off and Dulwich College continued to discriminate against our family by refusing to postpone the hearing despite how unwell I was. This again perfectly exemplifies the dishonesty in all advertising materials from Dulwich College about any kind of integrity in the culture in the leadership team. We had benefit of the doubt at first that we were dealing with one or two nefarious individuals, but unfortunately I can vouch this involved Dr Griffiths and members of the governing body who had ample opportunities to rectify this and not break the Equality Act. In parallel because of this disgusting discrimination and the degrading safeguarding failures against our elder child during 7+ we withdrew our application for our younger child which by that time had been accepted. To this date Dulwich College are still refusing to refund our younger child’s deposit of £2,000 even though we gave more than a term’s notice he wouldn’t be taking the place. In short a wholly disgusting bunch of individuals who you probably don’t want anywhere near your children. Hope this review is useful and saves other families the pain of watching their child be harmed by dishonest and bigoted individuals who have no place in the education system in the 21st century.
    • Hello! Our fridge freezer just died and need a short term replacement while we wait for our new kitchen to be installed please   Thank you in advance.
    • My flat pack furniture delivery slot was changed to this coming Monday and unfortunately my helper is not able to assist me with bringing 4 boxes (2 x 38kg, 2x 21kg) up one flight of stairs that day. Friends not wfh that day either and don’t think I can do it myself. So I was hoping someone living near Barry Road might be able to help out and come by (likely midday - 5pm, depending on  delivery drop off on the day) and help getting this upstairs in return for a small handling fee. It shouldn’t take more than 10min .  Please DM me if you know someone.
