Le Chardon

In my opinion Le Chardon is one of the best restaurants on Lordship Lane, I haven't been there recently but when I have gone there (lunchtimes and evenings) the atmosphere is marvelous, the food delicious and cooked exactly how I want it, the staff have always made me feel welcome and treated me like a princess regardless of whether I'm with my main man, my sister, my friends, a client or my boys, always a good experience one of the best restaurants in south London( and I've been to a lot ) and also very reasonably priced.

Have just had a fabulous meal, yet again, at Le Chardon - the first restaurant in East Dulwich before its gentrification, that may well have attracted all the others that made this such a special place - and, as usual, I enjoyed the wonderful French experience. How we laughed about the English failure to understand the French sense of humour. But I'm Welsh, and I get it. It only adds to the experience. But the ma?tre d' also said to me that many of her English customers 'get it' too. And she valued that. Sadly, only a small minority of English customers don't get it, but they can be most vociferous in their criticism of this wonderful establishment. Quelle domage. Vive la revolution!

See deal on Groupon:

Guests can get a taste of France in East Dulwich, with ?55 to spend on food and drink between two people at Le Chardon. The a la carte menu features starters such as moules marini?re (usually ?8.50), snails with garlic butter (?7.95) and a plateau de fruit de mer to share, including oysters (?23.50). Mains include the salmon fillet with hollandaise sauce (?14.95) and a traditional fish stew (?18.95). The less carnivorous can bid adieu to hunger with the baked aubergine stuffed with mixed herbs (?12.50).

Do beware of the Groupon and Amazon deals at this restaurant. From my experience, and that of several people I know who have bought these offers, you will be served tiny portions of vastly inferior food to what is being served to other diners who are paying the full price from the a la carte menu. When I went, my daughter's steak was less than half the size of the steak served to the man on the next table, and was barely edible. The attitude of the staff also changes rather abruptly when they realise that you are using one of the offers, and they really do treat you like second class citizens. I think some of the Groupon and Amazon deals can be quite good value, but in my opinion, buying the offer for Le Chardon really is a false economy.

We went as a Time Out offer. Probably it's the same deal?

I thought the food was OKish, though I wouldn't rush back (tender steak but completely tasteless, if memory serves), and did not at all feel treated like a second class citizen - the service we had was fine.

However I did not enjoy the house wine (I think we had the merlot) which was far from cheap and really bumped up the cost of the meal, as did the post-meal armagnac (it was my partner's birthday) which I had also expected to be better :(

I don't think I'd go back even with a voucher, and I certainly wouldn't pay full price if the quality of the food and drink is as it was when we went.

There's a tiny place in Forest Hill (the Catford end) called Gurkha's Flavour which quite often comes up in Time Out offers and which is very good value for a meal for two. Their Indian/Nepalese food is very nice :)

Gurkha's Flavour actually has a deal on Living Social right now -

Starter, Main Course and Side Dish with Glass of Wine or Beer for Two (?14) or Four (?28) People

I've always meant to give it a go...

We have lived in ED for 10 years. The Chardon used to be one of the best places to eat around here...providing you were able to cope with the snooty actitude of the woman who ran it before! I wasnt...we have dinner there recently and were dissapointed with the food which is pretty average, quality gone

down but so have the price. The tables are too closed to each other. Staff were attentive ,room is pleasantly decorated. The house merlot is just palatable but not value for money.

Glad somebody else thinks so - I thought maybe it was just me not properly appreciating wine :))

I could scarcely drink it, and it was far from cheap for a house wine.

    • Second time Aria has completed a plumbing job for me and both times he’s been polite. Communicative, kept to time and completed the job. He’s very helpful and tidy as well. First job was ball valve in water tank, not easy at all. He and his team were fantastic. This time kitchen tap cylinders replaced and tap tightened.  Much appreciated, Aria thank you.
    • Thought others may be interested to help a local community centre help others.    My bank account offers roundup and it’s been growing all year. As well as treating myself or putting it towards a train ticket to see my family I’ve made a donation to the Albrighton. They can use donations at any time but I hope my donation will go towards the Christmas hampers.    Can you support them so they can provide Christmas hampers?   https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/albrightoncommunityfridge?utm_id=1&utm_term=M22JKQb6W   A donation of £50 will pay for a hamper to feed a family over this Christmas period. A donation of £30 will pay for a hamper to feed someone living on their own over the Christmas period.
    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
