Tom Kitchins restaurant is great (Kitchins) if you want something more affordable he has also opened a gastro pub called the Scran and Scallie. Locanda de Gusti is good Italian and I've not been but the Gardiners Cottage has been highly recommended so is definitely on my list!

Upstairs at The Doric Tavern is pretty good and not too pricey. The Kitchin mentioned above is fab. Some cracking pubs down there as well (Leith). Fishers in the City on Thistle Street worth a look.

The Last Drop pub on the Grassmarket does really good beer and crisps Steveo, for when the high end restaurants bleed you dry mate....

For a real treat try the restaurant at the Museum of Scotland. You get good food, good service and a great view. There's a set menu (at least at lunchtime but maybe as pre-theatre too) as well as a la carte. If the weather is anything approaching nice, you can take yourself and your drink outside to a terrace. Also, ask them to show you the way to the roof garden, which is separate from the restaurant, for great views.

The caff in the museum, and the museum itself of course, are well worth a visit. Cocktails at Missoni, a newish hotel, are good (if mainly for the venue and the nattily-kilted door staff). Sl?inte mhath!

Kitchins and Martin Wisharts are great or down that end of town there is also The Ship on The Shore which is great value and they do lovely fresh seafood.
