Draft house

They claim on their website their Pizzas are cooked in a wood burning oven.

As I understand it wood burning ovens are not permitted in any smokeless zone.

I believe a well established Pizza House somewhere in North London was forced to stop

using theirs after decades of use.

I think the one at The Actress is Gas ??? Is that right. ?

Having said all that, these oven are supposed to take 2 weeks to reach operating temperature.

So in reply to Louisa's post above, it would not be practical to just open at weekends.

Local businesses selling logs for people to burn in their ED wood burners

are not responsible for where the logs will be burnt.

Owners of Wood Burners are responsible to ensure that the devices they have are DEFRA approved.

If not, they cannot be used and huge fines can be incurred if this is ignored.

According to Franco Manca's website, the actual opening times are Mon-Sat 12:00-23:00, Sun 12:00-22:30.

Using the official webpage for information & not a drunk in the pub. Crazy.

Their Basic 'Pizzas' are ?4.50 & ?5.90 Does not merit 'posh cheese on toast'

'posh cheese on toast' costs ?10.00 + like the ones at The Actress.

In that case I'm predicting a massive downturn in The Actress's business.

Sadly The Actress's pizzas are mostly vile (in my opinion). Admittedly I'm biassed (biased?) by having one served up to me almost raw (twice), but some of their topping combinations are just strange.

Not very impressed by Sorsi Morsi's, either.

Looking forward to trying the new place, as it's a bit of a trek to The Gowlett.

Wow - is that Fox actually approving of a new venture's price point?

I still find it inconceivable in times of economic hardship that people can justify spend anything in the price range we speak of for cooked bread with toppings on it. You could fill your boots at a working mans caf with twice as much food for half the price. Bizarre people.

You do realise, I assume, that just because we're struggling to emerge from recession, doesn't mean that people don't have a tenner to spend on a pizza and a beer once in a while.

Oh, and please tell me where this "working mans caf" is where I can stuff my face for ?2.25.

Considering I know more or less where you live I find that statement ridiculous. It's a short walk away from where you live and serves fine ales with their delicious reasonably priced pizzas.

Anyway farewell Draft House, hello Franco Manca.

It's a much shorter walk from where I live to other places serving pizza, and it will be a very much shorter walk to Franco Manca.

It's all in the perception of distance, not in the actual distance.

But do feel free to find my statement ridiculous :))

ETA: Re The Actress's pizzas: Pea, leek, gorgonzola, ricotta and spinach. You don't find that strange, Jeremy?? Anyway, I had it (once). It was both raw and vile. And I love gorgonzola usually :(

Sue, you used to tell us all what an easy walk it was from ED to Hoopers when you had gigs there! (it was an easy walk... the Gowlett is even easier).

"Pea, leek, gorgonzola, ricotta and spinach" - it's unorthodox for a pizza topping, but as a combination of flavours I would consider it fairly normal. Actually it sounds quite good.

Jeremy you know as well as I do that you can go to the Dulwich Cafe (or similar) and have a large meal and drink for under a fiver. Now I challenge you to find a pizza "restaurant" that serves up anything nearly as healthy and filling for the same price. You are justifying the unjustifiable and you know it! Bread with bits on 8-20 quid or a meal with meat and two veg for under a fiver. I rest my case.
