been told that the NMH gig last night was disappointing

I disagree with almost all of that list- but it's no surprise when it's been put together by someone's who's idea of edgy and interesting is Kings of Leon

TV On The Radio- Brilliant

MGMT- first album very decent

Wavves- second album excellent

Decemberists - brilliant

Ariel Pink - massively underrated, misunderstood genius

Beirut- hit and miss

Grizzly Bear- the best band in the world, recorded and live

Bright Eyes- how can anyone hate Bright Eyes ffs?

Arcade Fire- gradually getting worse, but Funeral is one of the albums of the last 20 years

Tune-Yards- genuinely exciting

Bon iver- two really solid albums

No I wasn't at that gig. Myself and out bearded friend went to see them at the Shepherds Bush Empire, it was the same year as you saw them, but a few months earler.

I met you guys for a beer before you went to see them, but couldn't face the gig, and was totally gutted to hear they'd done the feckin whale song!!!!!

It was Feb 2007 I saw them in SheBu. It was particularly annoying because although the smoking ban didn't come in til July that year, the empire had taken it upon themselves to start early, but had no option to go out for a fag, it was stay in or leave and don't come back.

I bloody hated that gig!

titch juicy.

Excellent post, agree on almost everything, well except grizzly bear, good but country mile from best band.

I hated the audience at bright eyes not the band; actually mr oberst had a distinct lack of self knowing irony that i had attributed to him. My mistake, not his admittedly.

I might even give waaves another chance on the back of that. (first album committed the crime of being boring, noise doesn't cover the lack of a good tune).

But how can an NMH gig be dissappointing?!?!

We were literaly never expecting to ever see them again, but they came back, job done.

..and did a solid set.

If your friend mentions the word acoustics then just hit him from me.

RE the NMH Gig last night, The band were great, the acoustics were rubbish, and the standing crowd were asleep. Was a shame because the set deserved more of a reaction, but it was all a bit polite applause where we were, except us of course, but I got some funny looks.

So as a gig, I'd say the atmosphere could have been better, but that's the crowd's fault. As someone who was indifferent to the band before last night, I really enjoyed their performance and don't know what else they could have done.

gigging in London is such a strange beast - so many opportunities to see so many great bands and yet so many dull crowds.

Of course one breeds the other I suppose - if you are used to going to gigs why get excited by Yet Another One

Why do people spend so much cash going only to yak over the set as well?

Once upon a time I'd go to loads of gigs whether I was particularly interested in the act or not (I even went to see Nickleback, and actually was rewarded with a pretty spectacular stage show). I just loved the crowds and the atmosphere, but I'd always do my best to get in to it and cheer and jump around a bit. If I really couldn't get in to it I'd leave or just sit in the bar, but that was very rare.

And then I just got fed up with it. Yes there's the smoking ban, yes there's kids, yes I'm older and don't have quite the energy I did 10 years ago, but really and truly I just don't enjoy the experience so much anymore. So these days I'd only go out to see something I really wanted to see, or to see people I really wanted to see.

Luckily last night I got to see the people, and was also pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the band.

and because I'm just generally pedantic, and just to set out my stall....

which of the above bands are you talking about- i can see it being levelled at mgmt, beirut and bon iver possibly- but none of the others come close to your description

really surprised by more than one report of bad sound- not something you usually hear about the roundhouse

    • @CPR Dave He needs to communicate collectively with all of the beneficiaries.  That is the whole point of my original post.  Electronic communications are the best way of doing this, as I am doing now on this forum.  Apart from the gold digger who will get a six figure sum the rest of us are on four figures, and that is going down by the day. I'm offended by any suggestion that we are not behaving well.  What on earth do you mean?
    • Surprise, surprise. It didn't take them long, did it. This will be something of a test as to how much the council really care about parks and the environment. A footfall of 60,000. Are they mad? There is no way this park is designed for or can sustain that sort of use. Just had a look at the schedule. If allowed to go ahead, this will involve a large slice of the park (not the common) sectioned off and out of use for three weeks of May and the first week of June. Here's an idea, why not trial the festival in one of the other Southwark Parks, so the 'goodness' can be shared around the borough?
    • There was another unprovoked attack on Monday this week on a young woman nearby (Anstey Road) at 6.45pm. Don't have any other details, it was posted on a Facebook group by her flatmate. Pretty worrying  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EGfDrCAST/
    • OMFG is it possible for the council to do anything without a bunch of armchair experts moaning about it? The library refurb is great news, as it's lovely but completely shagged out - the toilets don't even work reliably. Other libraries in the area will be open longer house during the closure. July is a rubbish time to begin a refurb because it's just before the entire construction sector goes on summer holiday, and it would mean delaying the work another 8 months.
