Next EDF Drinks - Friday 5th Dec at The Wishing Well Inn

Recommended Posts

What are the appropriate places within ED? We have lots of bars and lively pubs, but these dont make for good Forum drinks venues as they tend to be too loud or too small or too crowded for a large group of people to mingle.

Perhaps SE15 has a larger number of accessible pubby pubs?

Anyway, 2 January it is - at the Gowlett, we can all compare festive scars and sip small libations.

For next year we should create a rota - it goes some way to ensure that people feel that their favourite places are being given a go. Frankly it will also reduce the stress on the people who organise the drinks.

So, perhaps now is the time to throw your ideas into the ring - I will start a new thread.

I personally think the 2nd is a bad idea. yes all for sticking to the first friday of the month in general, but think it would be a very poor turn out! Besides, who the hell spends the 1st under a duvet. The 1st is all about drinking off the 31st and starting the year as you mean to go on!

Personally I'd say the 9th works better, it would also be something to do in January which can be a bit dull after the festive season is done.

Venue... I like The Gowlett a lot, but wouldn't vote for it, 3 times in 18 months is a lot when other places have only been done once, or possibly not at all, and if the other night showed us anything, it'd that we should be prepared to venture to parts unknown, and we just might have a good time...

How about the Pheonix? The have the nice balcony area that they can reserve for groups, and it's not a bad place actually. Plus we can all pile back to Piers' after for Wii and wine ;-)

(though the food's meh tbh)

Shouldn't be an issue at the forum drinks. I was in there recently before getting a train to the fireworks at Blackheath, and thought to myself it seemed nicer than when I was last there about 3 or 4 years back!

East for buses back to the hood too.

ah now I feel pressured into posting :oP sorry for the neglect, my computer gave in to the blue screen of death on saturday so I'm a bit incommunicado at the moment :o(

I was sooooo pissed, woke up the next afternoon (ahem) with that sinking feeling! Say what I will about pubs painted black (and it's all true) but when it's ?2 a pint you can't really knock it!

Was indeed a great night and really good to meet you all, I would like to put together some witty anecdotes from the evening but I'm not sure I can remember much - I do recall lots of men without full sets of teeth though (not all were foprumites!) and a great rendition of Living on a Prayer which I was too Newbie to join in. I shall look forward to the next round (and I think I owe a few)

9th it is!

p.s any computer techies out there who'd know how to ressucitate a pink laptop??

Hi Karter

We are aiming to improve at the Uplands - The "crowd" has been succesfully moved on ..We do Have a new Chef and It has been a struggle to try and attract someone with integrity and a passion for food. We believe we have him... Newton has joined us from the renowned Rick Steins Fish restaurant and he will be developing our menu over the new year.

We have improved on our bar staff's training and have employed waitresses aswell as bar tenders, plus our prices are the best in Dulwich ! Really ...

Stella ?3

Staropramen ?3.2

Guinness ?3

1664 ?2.8

AND TO FINISH ..... we are open on CHRISTMAS DAY 10 - 2 !!!!

New years eve - ?10 entry - you get drinks tokens to the value PLUS Free Food !

Tickets can be bought at the bar and are available now ..

I would like to thank you for your comments and we will endeavour to keep on improving

Have a great Christmas if we don't get to entertain you before

Best Wishes

Deborah Bellis-Manager

popped into the Uplands today on the back of your post Deborah - not sure if that was you serving behind the bar at the time

Some light changes to the decor - there seems to be a cosier feel to the area just in front of the bar before the dining area and the menu has been simplified (A Good Thing in any pub IMO)

Twas Christmas Eve and therefore a different atmos everywhere around town so hard to judge accurately but we enjoyed ourselves and will be back

All the best

    • If anyone is going to the meetings above, you may wish to raise the issue of the impact of the lights, noise & activity on the local bat population. Gala commissioned a survey on bat activity, which stated that activity had been identified, with several species detected, and that action must be taken to minimise any disturbance to these legally protected species. One of the recommendations was "to limit artificial lighting and reduce noise levels starting at least 20 minutes before sunset throughout the event period"  I asked the Events Team three months ago whether this recommendation had been implemented. I finally got an answer yesterday - "This recommendation was not achievable due to the nature of the event... it was concluded that not implementing this recommendation would have little impact"  So there you have it. Commission a survey (box ticked) and then don't adhere to the findings because it's "not achievable", thereby wilfully and knowingly negatively affecting the foraging & commuting habits of a legally protected wildlife species. This is on top of the useless bird survey, which only takes into account activity within the walls of the site, not the surrounding area which is full of trees with nesting birds which are undoubtedly disturbed by a month of noise, lights & activity.
    • Really good service. Good bread. And very accommodating when we had to outwit our clever resident fox.
    • ...and so, 4 years on from the "dramatic planning meeting" that approved the "meganursery", how has it all worked out in reality? The building looks nice from the outside - but I don't know anything more. Did either of the nursery businesses on EDG fail because there was no demand for nursery places in East Dulwich? Did Carmageddon on East Dulwich Grove get worse? Were pre-COVID work patterns abandoned forever (lol)? Were some of the concerns expressed in opposition to the planning application a teensy bit overblown...? https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/southwark/mega-nursery-approved-amid-dramatic-planning-meeting/
    • If I don’t feed the birds, they’ve actually come and perched on the fence and stared directly at me through the window. The squirrels do that too.
