Our bin is placed quite close to the front wall. It would be quite possible for a passing hobo to reach over and bin-dip without placing a foot on the notable front path or trespass on the property as such.

Where do we stand on the legality of this? Before we break out the blunderbuss and pepper them both?

I was thinking about this thread earlier when I put some rubbish in someone's wheelybin that was on the pavement. I have on occasion put something in a wheely bin that is in someone's garden but close to the wall so within easy arms reach. I do feel a bit cheeky, but I wonder if anyone would ever tell someone off for doing this?

The bin (well, its contents) is your property, whether it is inside your fence or not.

So you can let loose with both barrels. Mind your eminent roses, though.

Going by the response to the post on the thief chasing car driver, I'm not so sure.

Otta, you need to be careful incase they think you are taking the item of rubbish and not depositing it.

I,d guess that these women looking through other people's bins are 'in need'? I watched 2 women go through all the bins in our street early one Sunday morning and they were taking clothes out mainly. My daughter asked me what I was looking at and I explained that these women were looking through all the bins, I said I didn't know who they were or what they were looking for. I did say there is a world out there where there are people struggling... And how very lucky we were to live in such a plentiful place where we have so much that our bins are over flowing. Poor you that don't like people recycling your rubbish. they were very tidy be the way, they put everything back in they didn't want.
I saw the very same thing and I watched them like a hawk until they noticed I was watching and went rushing round the corner. I noticed they had torn my rubbish bag with general waste. I think there are looking for metal and copper as this is where the money is, hence the trolly's to carry the load. I haven't seen them since and am always checking to see if my bin bags are torn. If I did see them in my front garden again, I won't be pleasant that's for sure.

    • For some strange reason, hubby likes to spend 'big' on family cards birthday and Christmas. I think it may have stemmed from his mother- she equated money with status and was a bit of a snob!  She was also quite eccentric - we asked for a suitcase one year and got a set of 4. One year she gave hubby the equivalent of a hearing aid - it was a device to hear bird song. Nobody we know send expensive cards. We have a twice yearly set of cards from the Foot and Mouth Painting Artists and have done for the last 30 plus years. I think they are around £12 for set of 10  - cannot remember what we paid this winter but they are fantastic value and beautiful paintings.  One of the best places around to buy cards is the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church Barry Road. Fantastic selection with a starting price of £1.30.
