Working from home - Lunch Monotony

phattmatt

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

First time poster, so please be kind.

I moved to East Dulwich a couple of months ago and have been working from home; I've been impressed by the area, there?s a good selection of shops and pubs to choose from and I?m pleased I moved here.

However, working from home has brought its own set of challenges; the one I?ve chosen to seek help with first is trying to avoid the monotony of Lunch...

Don?t get me wrong, lunch time is awesome, it?s good to get out, sometimes it?s good to stay in and cook; both a welcome distraction from work...

Recommendations for

a) places to go for lunch (value is the order of the day here) or

b) meals that can be made at home that are suitable for lunch (Lobster is nice, but not quite right for lunch)

would be gratefully received.

In a bid to being useful, here is a list of typical lunch recipes that maybe new to others:

Toast ? Toasted bread, can be served with some Olive Oil based spread.

Cheese on Toast - Toasted bread, one side covered in melted cheese.

Beans on Toast ? Toasted bread topped with reheated baked beans in tomato sauce.

Cheesy Beans on Toast ? See above, add cheese.

Cheesy Beans Dogs on Toast ? See above, add hot dogs (can be included with Beans).

Chilli Cheesy Bean Dogs on Toast ? See above, add....wait for it...Chilli powder.

As you can see I need help...

Matt.

Welcome Matt. Don't be so hard on yourself, six fine recipes there, that Chilli Cheesy Bean Dogs On Toast is a masterstroke.

With this sort of creativity you don't need to be giving hard-earned wedge to local caffs.

And be sure to give the Forum a mention when you appear on Masterchef.

And if you can nut John Turd, then the Addlestones are on me.

Cook a big bowl of soup on Sunday. Have some on Monday. Ignore it the rest of the week. At least your intentions were good.

EDIT: Hi Phatt, welcome. What kind of value are you after? I think you could eat your way down Lordship Lane, starting at, say, Badger Bakery, and report back to us. You have to have one lunch in every venue that's open. Maximum ?? (to be decided by you). A bit of spin and some stupid bugger-handles, and you'd probably get a Dave Gorman style book out of it.

Matt, I salute you.

In the current turbulent economic climate, suggestions for what to have for lunch whilst you're watching Trisha is a brave request. But as it happens, this is my specialist subject.

Monday: 1 x tin Baxters Carrot & Coriander (with 'Trisha')

Tuesday: 1 x tin Baxters Pea & Ham (with Trisha)

Wednesday: 1 x tin Baxters Mushroom Potage (with 'Trisha')

Thursday: 1 x tin Baxters Carrot & Coriander (with 'Trisha')

Dress-Down Friday: 1 x tin Heinz Chicken Noodle (with 'Doctors')

Thanks for all your responses:

ian_b - Once I've steeled myself to the long walk I'll check out Cafe Prov

HonaloochieB - I quite like cooking but am unlikely to ever find myself on Masterchef...Have you noticed that John always gets his way on the 50/50 choices?

TillieTrotter - Apples and Cheese, classic

Bob & Ted - Soup is always good, but I can't bring myself to eat (drink?) it every day :)

david_carnell - Thanks for the link, some good stuff in there I'll be trying...

Marmora Man - All good stuff to add into the rotation, thanks.

Peckhamgatecrasher - Again, sounds good for when I can't be arsed to cook in...

Cheers All.

That's because John's actually a real chef and knows something about cooking, whereas Greg is a baldy greengrocer - he stole that gig

This is what I tend to end up with when at home for lunch

Make extra the night before and have a portion at lunch

Cheese on oatcakes (with apple on occasion)

Couscous with some bits of salmon/chicken/veg

Wrap with chicken/bacon and avocado (with a dash of chilli oil)

Roll with fish fingers and garlic mayo (sounds horrific, tastes amazing)

Soups with bread to dunk (so that you are still 'eating' something)

Tuna Melts - toast with tuna, some peppers and then melted cheese on top (you're nearly there on that one!)

Cheese block also have brill vegetable sammosas

The ED Deli has Gloucester Old Spot sausage rolls

The cafe at Christchurch opposite the Plough has Quiche and salad plus roast lunches slightly more expensive than the

greasy spoon cafes, but is worthy of the extra, although you have to be capable of tolerating children.

Welcome to the Forum.

LostThePlot is organising a forum for people who work from home - I'll try and find the link.

Meanwhile, I have a better idea re lunch.

Get up reeeeeeeeally late and then have brunch which could be anything, - then work through till the evening.

Well, it's what I do!

Fry up onions with curry powder or curry paste

Add can of beans

Simmer until "leathery"

Eat on toast, with naan bread, or on baked potato

If you feel more adventurous, substitute the curry powder/paste with your own blend of spices, with fresh ginger and garlic. You could even add mushrooms or other veg.

This dish just keeps on giving, really.

Oh Phattmatt, how lucky you are to be working from home

There is only one lunch that I can recommend that is better at home then anywhere else

Home made Bacon and Egg (with Optional Mushrooms and tomato) sandwiches on lightly grilled bread...

Think about it, no one will comment when the softly fried egg yolk starts to slide down your chin, no one will point at you when you have egg or tomato sauce (or HP) down you tank top, no one can tell you that you are too phatt to have another one... what a luxury to have to be able to make one of those when you want...................................

Oh my Lord, I am getting so excited by the prospect that I may have to go and have one now .......(bacon Sandwich before BOB implies somethign optionally else)

Hmmmmmmm Danissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh

Baked. The "tomato" sauce in the beans is pivotal to the dish. But no reason why you couldn't add some other beans too.

    • Southwark and Lambeth may have some spaces but this is not the case of other London boroughs nearby particularly at secondary level. Also this is not just a London issue. There are many regions throughout the UK that have no school places available (eg Kent due to new housing developments, rural areas, Surrey, Guildford, Edinburgh etc). Just because you feel it doesn’t affect you, does not mean it’s right.  You also need to consider the proportion of foreign students in many of the private schools in the area which distorts the impression that local people can pay private school fees and suck up an additional £4-5k per child and per year. And sadly, the psychological and emotional impact on children is not even being discussed.
    • Step in a child’s shoes just for one moment and think what it would be like to have to move schools in the middle of the year away from your friends, teachers, community etc. due to a political stunt. I doubt the money will even go into education. The UK will be become the only European country to tax education. Primary schools have some capacity where I live but I have enquired and there are currently no places for secondary school where I live. Again, so easy to be smug and say we should have pre planned a potential outcome 5 years ago when you live in your £2-3m homes next to the best state schools in Dulwich (like Keir Starmer!)
    • Please let me know if anyone is selling a Hemnes daybed in the near future. Thanks
    • Birth rate collapses sounds a bit like Armageddon.  It's a mixture of a decline following a bulge, where many schools had to increase intake, and families moving out of the capital due to high cost of housing.  Now that is an irony, that only wealthy families, many who can afford private schooling, can afford to live in many parts of London.
