Sooooooo, not to interrupt the discussion on "alone time" for too long...

I liked the sound of the Cheese Block vegetarian samosas so I popped in there today.

The samosa, as promised, was very nice; not too dry and just a bit spicy.

I also picked up a tricolore ciabatta sandwich, it was very tasty.

On a completely unrelated topic to anything else that's been discussed; the new Countdown girl (Rachel) is very good isn't she....

1) Buy yourself a scrumptious bagutte for only ?1.50 from Cafe 2050 on Forest Hill Road. These are a little on the small side but perfect for 1 large, 2 smaller portions.

2) If you are famished, slice it lengthways in half and generously butter both pieces. (I recommend a viewing of "Diva" to see the correct technique for this). If only moderately starving use half the loaf, save the remainder for the evening. Do not take it to the park to feed the ducks with. This may well be excellent dispacement activity but you should be back working and anyway bread is bad for ducks...

3) generously lay (see here how I cunningly sustain the carnal theme so repugnantly commenced by other saddos in here) your choice of filling - it may be hot bacon and HP sauce, corned beef and Branston pickle, ham and mustard....jam if you are economising.

4) Eat

Time to introduce some Ian Dury lyrics here methinks.

I'm in love with the person in the sandwich centre

If she didn't exist I'd have to invent her

There isn't any secret to my frequent visits

It's the way she makes them and they're all exquisite

I'm in love with the person in the sandwich centre

I'm enamoured of the magic of her fresh polenta

My temperature rises and my pulses quicken

When she gets cracking with the coronation chicken

Geraldine, Geraldine

I know there's much more to life than the physical side

And I should put these thoughts on hold

But when she buttering my baguette

My blood runs hot and cold

Geraldine, G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Geraldine

Geraldine, G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G

I'm in love with the person in the sandwich centre

I'm living for the moment that I next frequent her

In beauty's eyes beholding my inamorata

As she works her wonders on a dried tomato

Geraldine, Geraldine

I know there's much more to life than the sensual side

And the spiritual should come first

But when she's buttering my baguette

I think I'm going to burst

Geraldine, that's the nicest badge I've ever seen

Geraldine, you make the world seem fresh and clean

Geraldine, G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Geraldine

That it may be.

But when it costs 50p for a tin of meat you know something's wrong.

I'll stick with Ena Baxter, thanks.

Her fictitious family of rustic Scots have been making homemade soup for years - and never for less than 59p per shot. Quality.

Ted,

I'm finding it hard to reconcile your suggested ?2.95/day (for the cheaper pie - beak & snout, I expect) with my current expendition of 59p for Ena's finest. (89p if I need an emergency tin from the Co-Op)

Even allowing for my daily soup supplement (2 slices bread (white), once inch-cubed cheddar cheese (number 3 or higher) cut into thin slices) - it represents one hell of a hike.

In fact, lunch expenditure would rocket by an extra ?800 per year - seriously cutting into my budget for designer furniture, cocaine, pointless electronic devices etc etc

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you. • ''He caused chaos  in this country with his put down of everything British and his many dismal words about the effects of Brexit on this country.'' What utter tosh. Carney had to mitigate the effects of Brexit caused by plastic patriots like Farage. For example, immediately after the 2016 Brexit vote the BoE had to intervene fiscally by dropping interest rates and increasing QE in order to prevent the economy from taking a big hit.  They were unable to prevent the £ from crashing at the time, and it has since been worked out that the effect of that alone caused a circa £900/year hit to each UK household, which equates to the UK @ £450m/week.   There's reams of data out there that shows the economic damage Brexit has caused to the UK. Here's one looking at business investment, admittedly not very sexy but kinda important if you want to achieve economic growth. It's clear to see that prior to 2016 we had reached parity with some of our main rivals, but since then we've flatlined. All that Brexit has achieved is to win the race to the bottom. There's a reason why Farage never brought up Brexit at the last election, he knows himself it hasn't delivered on any of the promises, quite the reverse in fact.  Labour, stupidly, by saying they can make Brexit work have in effect given Farage a Get Out of Jail Free card...
