I'm going to get shouted at for this, but... Sonic Youth? I liked them as a kid, but listening to them now (with one or two exceptions) their songs just aren't very good. Influential on lot's of others though.

Personally, I still like the Pixies. Surfa Rosa and Doolittle are great albums.

I give her credit for being a highly insightful and creative person but there is just something about her voice that grates on me.

Sonic Youth's more recent stuff is actually worth a listen especially as its not particularly hyped.

Try Sonic Nurse for starters showing they've kind of mellowed, or Eternal, which is as close to an actual rock album as they're ever likely to manage.

I recommended them to a colleague a few years back, who wanted to watch some live music and they were playiing their london dates. He didn't talk to me for about 3 days.

"why would you do that to me?" he kept asking :D

I know it's just your opinion- but I feel I can help. If you don't find something you like amongst this lot I will give up preaching the Gospel of Cave

Hmm... they're one of those bands you were supposed to like, rather than one that actually wrote good songs.

Santana.

Looking at the previous posts it seems to be mainly down to personal taste, so it'll probably be the same names. It may also depend on who rates them - does critical opinion count more than popularity?

Worth remembering too that their reputation may not have grown organically and may be partly due to misguided PR or celebrity stuff. With Coldplay, for example, the Gwyneth Paltrow link certainly added something to how people see them.

    • That's absolutely disgusting. If it's true they should have closed the shop until it was fixed.
    • I have read conflicting accounts, some say the Peckham Rye pond chelonians are fresh water turtles others that they are red-eared terrapins. As well as terrapins, there are reports of Musk Turtles, a non native, fresh water turtle species also being released into the wild. They are also better equipped to survive our winters and do not seem to need to bask as much as terrapins. Perhaps we have both. I have not been able to see them close enough to observe markings.
    • If you look in the Gala thread someone posted a map of the event site, which has larger footprint than before. The build has already started and will now continue until the event. Dismantling is due to end 1st June, I think.
    • I have been involved with our local Residents' Association and also the East Dulwich Community Centre since the early 1980s. Both organisations initially had good attendance and representation from the local community but over the past few years so called 'community minded people' are more interested in social media/WhatsApp Groups and discussing things on line rather than meeting in person. The EDF is a very good source of local knowledge and I use it frequently for various reasons but it is no substitute for person to person engagement. I also help out at an over 55 age group which meets weekly for 2 hours and it is noticeable that the majority of attendees are those who frequently use social media sites, but have come to the conclusion that face to face contact is essential for their well being.  There are organisations in ED which put on social events, most are family friendly. for free or low cost where neighbours/friends can meet up - you do not need additional green spaces for this to happen.
