Xmas is coming (so I've heard) and v much considering a slow cooker present for me other half. Any further brands to recommend? Is 3.5l the right size for family of 4? And, most importantly, would it be right for pulled pork?!

Also any good books? He's an adventurous cook so would like some recipes beyond the basics.

Thank you

www.slowcookercentral.com is fab too! I would recommend getting one with the inner that can go on the hob to brown meat if you want to and can go in oven to finish off dumplings etc. Slow cooker is much more economical than having the oven on all day and can be safely left on whilst you go out.
I wish I had bought one that you can use on the gas hob (to brown onions etc) then move over to slow cooking part. I tend to make batches of a certain recipe and freeze the rest. It's good for making sure you know you'll have a meal to come home to!
Im a slow cooker fan - we call it the magic pot - walk in after a hard days work and dinner is done! The absolute key is TO THICKEN at the end you need to make a butter and flour roux or mix a bit of corn flower with water and stir in before serving. Also I throw a handful of barrley in most stews as the absorb water and thincken things up.

    • True but I doubt nobody around lordship lane has a phone. The value that the phone box provides is severely outweighed by modern circumstances and its painfully ugly look. Having to use that phone in an emergency is an emergency in itself.
    • Yes, except round here is started in early September, through October, in all that means fireworks season is now 5 months of the year.  Again, what is the attraction in startling random bangs. Why do people think this is okay?
    • You've gone a bit Alan Patridge again.... Why on earth would I need to eat humble pie, I really can't fathom what your point is?
    • Ahh, the traditional smell of the BT air fresher, hint of urine, used to stop people spending hours in the phone box and queues forming.  Although it is disgusting that people feel its their rights to treat a utility as their own personal litter bin and urinal. 😔
