DulwichFox
The Grove Tavern has a massive car park. This was fine in the 50s-60s-70s when attitudes to drinking and driving and indeed laws were different. The Grove was always a driving destination. As a Harvester the food was dreadful. They tried Quizzes, always the last resort of a failing pub business. But Quizzes bring in crowds who simply buy one drink, sit there all night and then leave when the Quiz is over. Cannot see it ever opening up as a pub again. BeccaL
The Florence has a beer garden, but certainly wouldn't say it was large - more like small/medium. Nice pub though! DulwichFox
Not sure The Great Exhibition needs a Quiz. They obviously feel the need to bring in more custom. I go to the pub to have a few beers and a natter. Not to sit there in silence listening to some TWOT prattling on reading questions from Great Pub Quizzes Vol. 98. Question 67. What is the value of the Green Ball in Snooker...............? FFS get a life.. Louisa
What's this obsession with music, quizzes, food, sport on TV? I just don't get it! A public house is an institution aimed at folk who want to consume liquor and basically socialise with decent conversation and interaction. Get a life and stop turning a boozer into a friggin social club slash restaurant. Louisa. spark67
I think you'll find a lot of people like going to pub quizzes, the silver post is packed on their nights...there are a lot of nights that pubs don't have quizzes for people who don't like them to go on. Good grief you really hate to see people enjoy themselves Louisa, He probably played the troll card as you are quite the professional at it.I am not surprised the Tavern site is being developed into flats...it's not worked for a while as a pub/restaurant I watched it slowly go down hill when I lived opposite. Louisa
Oh spark67 give it a rest. What mindless idiot would go to a pub just for those things? If a pub had to survive off of the business supplied by those customers they'd be skint within a month. And no he didn't play the troll card for that reason, if you look at his history you'll see other references to pubs and quizzes and such like. Its the EDF syndrome, don't agree with someone? Play the troll card. Boring. Louisa. Having a different opinion to you is not 'trolling'; you casually scatter too many crumbs for even that to be a satisfactory past time. My perception of a pub is more of a place where a variety of people can be accommodated, be that with music & 'fancy' food free times but also with attractions to draw in spending customers. New blood keeps things moving. You & Fox supping half of mild and bemoaning the Norman invasion and contemplating an outr? splash of Worcester Sauce on your cheese on toast was gone long ago. Have a good weekend. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/50237-grove-tavern-to-reopen-fact-or-fiction/page/3/#findComment-814722 Share on other sites
Louisa
How did you know fox and I drank half a mild? How were you aware we were around during the Norman invasion? This is all slightly scary. MrBen
I get the sentiment and history of the place...but apart from Jah.....how many of you actually went there in recent years on a regular basis? I didn't. And I'm pretty sure most on this thread weren't regulars either.Choice (not all homogenised choice) in Peckham, LL and Forest Hill has increased massively in the past 15 years so this location now looks way oversized for it's previous purpose and is now on one of London's busiest traffic clogged roads.A smaller pub there would perhaps be good...but only for the odd occasion when the other 15 pubs that are near shops, transport etc don't appeal. It's time has passed I'm and not everything with a history needs to be sacred for ever more. Louisa
I agree MrBen. It's time has passed. Sad but undeniably true and nothing will change that. Just seems a shame various historic hostelries and landmark building are losing out to brand new pubs in less salubrious surroundings (thinking of both Peckham pubs). I still refer to King on the Rye even today, and it's been gone a very long time now. Louisa. You're right that I didn't go regularly before because in its last couple of guises, it wasn't very good. Poor food and poor beer. If it had been better, I would have gone regularly. It's not that far from residential streets - and in the ones behind that strip of shop and this end of Wood Vale and Sydenham Hill, this would be their closest pub in walking distance. I can't think of 5 pubs that are within 10 minutes walk of my house, let alone 15! We don't all live within walking distance of the main drag of LL.And while I agree that it's horribly congested at peak rush hour, it's not that bad the rest of the time. After 6.30 most nights, the South Circular is virtually empty. I cycle along it most nights after that time, and often there are only a handful of cars passing me.
