Michael Parkinson was an excellent sporting journalist before he went even near the Beeb. Then when he started his chat show he had this novel idea of shutting up and letting the guests speak. Mohammed Ali, Hollywood Greats like Niven & Stewart & Astaire, and great raconteurs like Kenneth Williams and Robert Morley. And I will treasure him forever for that first interview with Billy Connolly and the "bike" joke....He never set out to be John Freeman and "Face To Face"

MMM Simon I think i will let the great man respond to you

"your the biggest hypocrite in the world, You ain't used to no boxer, no black man coming on to talk sense, you don't have enough wisdom, you do not have enough, your too small mentaly to tackle me, you and your little TV show....you really are a JOKE, I'm serious you really are a JOKE..behind stage your all hee haa haa hee yoor so nice hee hee how are you ? then you get me on the TV and try to corner me with your little book but i caught you you and this little tv show aint nothing to Muhammed ali your got some more questions and i'll bet you i'll eat you up right now"

Ali to Parky

.....it's a funny thing wisdom you either have it ir you don't. And parkinsons got nothing nothing, all those interviews and he learns nothing.

The fact that Parkinson made some profound comments about Jades life, so I suppose that shows an insight to the fickle rants of Michael Parkinson, Ali kicked his ass, what a great man Ali is and what a great fighter (No other boxer looked like him No other boxer fought like him, "Joe Frazier ain't he ugly?, I'll take both those bums on the same night")

Of course Simon, there was an element of chat shows being about either conversation or just the guest talking, and talking, and talking. At least it wasn't about the plugging or promotion of what the guest was touting at the time.

Though at times it might have been, but was done so more subtely.

Let's lobby the BBC to bring back Face To Face, I'm not sure who should be the interviewer, not yet.

But the interviewee should be in the public eye, should be prepared to face intelligent, probing questioning and be someone who is...I was about to make all sorts of qualifications, but no.

Maybe if Armando Iannuci was involved, though.

The mind boggles that AFN believes that s/he has built her own pedestal sufficiently high to have a valid opinion on the 'quality' of public figures.

I mean, only teasing, but sometimes I wonder if AFN's idea of a cultural tour de force is standing on street corners throwing stones at buses?

Is someone suggesting that Ali had wisdom? Wishful thinking I suspect.

when you say public figures, you mean actors and luvvies who appear on parky's old chat show and on a channel they have there own shows on anyway ? i mean its basically no different from some, bint news reader ice skates then goes on a bbc chat show ! really public my arse, lets see gerry adams or ian paisley get grilled/interviewed, lets interview Arafat or castro ! anyone other than fucking miss piggy, phil collins and christ not ronnie bleedin corbert again !!!

and all opinions are valid, just that mine hold weight while parkies hold shite and as for Ali and Wisdom he was f ing wise enough not to want to go on holiday to saigon !!!!!!!

and i would rather a tour de france than a tour de force by all accounts it like amsterdam, drugs galore !!!

What a load of "Right On" Bollix!....Complete and utter Bullshit ...

I watched all Ali's interviews with Parky and as Brian Clough said to Ali, while he was in the audience that night, Ali lost it big-time!..He ranted incoherently, completely losing his rag because Parky pointed out something that did not seem logical or make much sense.

The great Ali lost his calm, collected mind that night and all dignity disappearred because he was not "big" enough to handle the criticism...He folded like a pack of cards and his temperament was exposed and his insecurity and fragility came through.

Usual boring addendum..."Yes" Ali WAS a great Man(how pathetic that I feel that I have to redress the balance when criticising a Black Guy on The EDF(...He was a great motivator and inspiration to millions Worldwide and, ofcourse, a great Champion but he lost it that night and looked a raving, ranting fool.

er.......NO

Parky said sweet FA and got stamped on........ali did what he did best and made his point with force and conviction very unliberal.......parky had neither force or conviction so said nothing in response, so what if ali looked like he ranted or lost his temper your point is what ?....your point is someone loses his temper and apparently he must be wrong.. that is the whole liberal get out clause right there... please think about what you are saying, i do not agree with you , you are ill informed , misguided at best and manipulative at worst. AFN

How fascinating that Ali got personal with Parky and you have chosen to do the same with me AFN...so lets get "personal" if you wish.

Firstly I have just watched the clip again to refresh my memory. I said b4 tha Ali was not being logical (from memory) I did not remember, as it was 35 years ago, what the actual point was that Parky was making but now I have just seen it, then lets examine what Parky said.

He said to Ali that you are a Worshipper of a Religion/Group that believes "The White Man is a Devil" and yet "you have White Friends, indeed more White Friends than any other Black Guy that he knows".

Parky went on to say that "your" Religion believes in total "seperatism" from White people and on the surface this would appear a blatant contradiction, given that Ali appears to have "more White friends etc"....

Surely a perfectly valid question?

How can anyone praise Ali for his performance that night? He was nothing more than a verbal bully giving Parky no chance to answer or make further points or indeed get involved in a conversation.

I assume you understand and grasp the meaning of a conversation?..It would appear not.

Its when YOU talk and I listen and then, guess what?...I talk and then you listen and then it continues with both parties allowing the other to talk and make their points.

This is something that Ali clearly did not want to do and just ranted on and on and you approove of this type of behaviour??

You think its perfectly acceptable for one party to completely monopolise a conversation?

Then Ali started talking about other White "Devils" bracketing all White people in this category and you think thats acceptable AFN?

I have been in a situation a few times over the years with a "ranter" when its impossible to get a word in and I look at them just like Parky did that night and think "you ignorant so-and-so"..its thoroughly unpleasant.

Please don't patronise me with "think about what you are saying"...maybe you should take your own advice AFN..

In conclusion I not agree with you , its you that is "ill informed and misguided" ....

Ali replied that all the White People he knows are "acquaintances".

Do you agree that he was a hypocrite then and do you not think that, on that occassion(which is all I am referring to) that he was an intimidating bully?

Of course you are right.

Its tragic and extremely sad whoever the Mother is LE.

slam dunk my arse ! i think Ali was restrained not to knock the silly man out. not meaning to get personal as i have no idea about you other than the moniker TLS.

But parky is a complete tool for saying what he said about JG and that is the end of it. Like to see him have a debate with the priest that buried her, but he won't and he can not because his public IMAGE will be trashed.

Almost as sad as the fact that Ali now (ironically) suffers from Parkinson's

Well Boy George informed us how to sell a contradiction in "Karma Charmeleon" but I can't say I'm totally sold on this one, I have to say.

Thought Parky was out of order with his Jade's comments but I'll forgive him making one more mistake than The Queen has made in their respective lifetimes...;-)

    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
