No, no joke! I saw a sign there somewhere saying exactly that as well as estate agents using it in adverts...

But PS The area around Peckham High Street IS the old historic Peckham Village. See http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/Historic_Peckham That is the real Peckham Village, rather than the recent development. But it is so close why quibble...

Bellenden has a long history. The local authority ward was called 'Bellenden' from at least the early 60s until it disappeared following boundary changes in 2002. What used to be Bellenden (basically the area around Bellenden Road but also including part of East Dulwich as far down as Northcross Road across to Barry Road) has been split four ways into Peckham Rye, The Lane (as in Rye Lane), South Camberwell and East Dulwich. There was (and may still be) a Bellenden Residents Group which covered the 'Rye Lane West' area.

'Bellenden Village' of course is another matter.

yes there is, brought to life in 2001 by the agonies of living in the middle of the Bellenden Renewal Scheme. New website just developing, temporarily hosted by peckhamvision website. see http://www.peckhamvision.org/brg/ Map there shows the area of Bellenden and also Rye Lane West.

There's some re-writing of history going on here.

Bellenden "Road" was only an un-named farm track until the third quarter of the mid-19th century.

The "agonies" of the multi-million pound infusion of public money for the middle-classes of Bellenden Village?

Make your own judgment about why a photograph of Goose Green is on the Peckham Vision web-site.

I can't believe the estate agent never mentioned this when I bought my house.

I will immediately be selling up and leaving the area.

    • Simply, give us a snap election now as the last 12 months in office honestly have not been great in any sense. Let someone else have a go at turning around UK plc before it's too late. At least the last administration had the inflation and unemployment rates going in the right direction at the END.
    • Yes but what's the answer, Jazzer? No government can simply walk in and fix the economy - get the bills down, grow it and reduce debt. There is no silver bullet. The public (and the press) wants everything now, everything cheaper, but with better public services and lower taxes.  In the radio and paper, all you ever hear is pundits, MPs, think tanks and economists saying what won't work, but no one seems to know what will work.  I'm genuinely interested to hear what other views people have on here, and what they think will help, or make things worse.
    • While they struggle with economics of UK plc, collectively we all suffer as a result of their ineptitude.
