Apparently the Stockwell market (not the covered one) is closing in two weekend's time, one of my favourite haunts for 20 (very) odd years.

Anyway, apart from a bit of ranting from BBC journo Andrew Gilligan, outcry has been slight. No one seems to know what will happen on the site or seems to care, least of all the council. The Greenwich forum has tumbleweeds blowing through it.

I'm thinking

What a tragedy and where will I buy my tat now?

That is sad, both the markets at Greenwich are good, and I heard a while ago that the covered one was going to be redeveloped (although when and if that is true is another question)

It is a shame to loose vibrant markets like these which serve as a good tourist pull and help to keep local businesses alive (increased footfall at a site with markets results in increased sales in local restaurants, gift shops and so on)

I guess the lure of 'land for housing' is sometimes too great for councils and developers to resist in these times of low budgets and increased spending.

Mine too. Can't stand markets, mind. The covered one can close as well, and take its miniature frog sculptures, hessian shoes and astrological maps with it.

Oh the misery of an unsatisfactory shuffle round the market followed by a disappointing meal in a local cafe. In fact, the whole of Greenwich can piss off too. Not weel done, Cutty Sark.

I feel I'm being petty now but

Moos Mansions - PR 10 mins

(no wait for train because am clever and can read timetable. Assuming no mishaps)

PR - LB 10 mins

Wait at LB. Possibly have to get buggy up stairs, work out new platform etc. Up to 10 mins

LB - GW 10 mins

Realistically a 40 minute journey with the palaver of a change involved. I think that's a pain, given how close Greenwich is. Alternative is a bus, although you also have to change but at least you don't have to find your way at LB.

a teleport thingy.

Oh, that would be so, so marvellous.

However, quite apart from rendering the EDF mute* which would be a shame, I suspect that the council wouldn't build enough so that not only would you have to walk to your local TeleSpot, but queue there for ages for your turn, and then walk from the other end TeleSpot to your office. Would it really save time? Plus of course twits like me would press the wrong button when hungover and end up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the night.

For up-to-date research on how real teleportation really, truly is, lobby Southwark Playhouse to bring back The Ethics of Progress

*actually no - there's still class, isn't there? Sigh...

The challenge with teleporting is that it's more like faxing. You'd be leaving behind the original.

It would render you completely invulvnerable to litigation, as the jury could never have reasonable doubt that it wasn't your other you.

Hence you could cause all manner of havoc in Greenwich.

Isn't it strange that Greenwich market's called Stockwell Market?

Why is it closing?

Yes, exactly - you'd have loved The E of P. And how bizarre to be reassembled at the other end using wholly new molecules. I think the original gets melted down, or zapped, or whatever the scientific term is, though. The jury would have to make a call as to whether you could reasonably still be considered to be in your right mind, given that everything you were was now a pile of carbon and things somewhere else, and you now consisted of some new carbon and things.

"I just think that 2 such metropoli as Peckham and Greenwich ought to be linked by at least one direct means of public transport - preferably some sort of funky suspended monorail thingy, for fun."

What about the bus that goes from the bus station, via Queeen's Road Peckham straight through Greenwich, true it has to go via New Cross but still only 20-30 minutes (can't remember the number)

RE teleporting... would you want to do it, knowing that the "original" you would get destroyed, possibly painfully? You would essentially be killing yourself... but the "copy" would live on, taking over your life, but as a separate concious being. I wouldn't fancy it myself.

And what happens if a fly gets into the tele-pod?

    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
