Nowlives...ED is a pretty cool vibey (sp) little area....lovely eateries, good bars (some of them) and a kind of small-town semi-cosmpolitan vibe. I know, sounds like a contradiction in terms - but ..somehow the area seems to manage it. Actually caught myself grinning with pleasure when i got off the train at ED and walked up the Lane the other evening...so many happy people milling around taking in the chilled ED atmosphere. May becone a haven for wankers when the 4X4s proliferate and the displaced clapham set launch a full on invasion. But at the moment, its a fun, relaxed place to live.

nowliveinoz, Hello M8!

Why did you move, especially to the other end of the World, please?

Was it that you were getting disenchanted with Britain ( as many say on The "Pommies-In-Oz" or "British Ex-Pat" Forums or did you just love the idea of sampling The Australian Culture with its outdoor life and activities, courtesy of the weather?

This appeals to many who are thinking of moving, or have already moved to Oz, obviously.

Do you miss things about London or Britain, in general?

Are you glad you made the move and was Oz. what you expected?

After a beautiful walk this afternoon in Farnborough in the gloriously green English Countryside, with a lovely Summer's breeze, I feel proud and lucky to have been born here, by The Grace Of God..(tu)

Fields, Meadows,Woods, Rolling countryside, what more could you wish for on such a wonderful afternoon?;-)

Did you go to Monkey World, Michael P? It's a great zoo, who wouldn't enjoy spending the day looking at monkeys? Although I remember that when we were there, one of the chimps started, ahem, entertaining himself while staring at all the people watching on the other side of the glass.

"What's that monkey doing, mummy?"

"Never mind dearie, how about we all have ice creams?" (desperately) "Let's all have ice creams!"

  • 3 months later...

You are one busy geezer Oz.

3 months and still no reply from you, on a thread you initiated, as well....

In fact that you haven't replied to date, probably means you won't now or in the future, especially with your glorious Summer about to begin:X.

In fact it probably means you have forgotten about this thread and could care less if it is still here.

In fact it probably means that you will never see this note and I am talking to myself.

In fact it probably means that I should go now as this whole comment will be meaningless.

In fact I will go now....sorry to have bothered you "Oz"

p.s. Forget the last line as you won't see this anyway...

    • thanks Jenijenjen and all - yes, i remember walking or taking the bus from the elephant (where i was working) to Camberwell to get there.  I think Tim - who's still at Franklin's -  was there in those days, and the woman who ran the cafe!  Other food places that i remember fondly are the ones in Neal's Yard (with the Hunkin sculpture that you could put a coin in ) and the basement lunch place at the Tottenham Court Road junction with Hanway Street...
    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
    • Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o
